a tool that works

since i am constantly complaining about the lack of quality in some items,  i thought i would try to say at least one nice thing this month.

if you have not yet bought a truck tuner, the little reamer for sideframes, get one now.  i bought one from Micro Mark and it works better than i had hoped.

with over 500 cars on the layout, i have been constantly trying to weed out the "sleds" and get a fleet of free rolling freight cars.  i tried changing out wheel sets with metal wheels and even replacing some of the complete truck assemblies.

latest project was a bunch of older PRR box cars by Bowser.  i have over a dozen of these cars and they all acted like the hand brake was set on them.   i really like these cars and changing the trucks out was not a good option since they use a particular type of PRR freight car truck.

that little tool took a bunch of plastic shavings out of each journal and when reassembled with the original brass axles, they now all roll just great.

this tool paid for itself the first evening i used it.  saved me from replacing a bunch of wheels in a futile effort to get the cars to roll better.

it is well worth the cost.
