Single motor, no flywheels. I thought the 2 motor units were also without flywheels.

The DD35 and the 35A both had the 567-D3A prime movers, while the DD40AX's had the 645-E3A prime movers.

Did you also know there was a DDM45?

The DDA35 had two small radiator fans and four large radiator fans, while the DDA40X had six large radiator fans. The fans on the DDA35 were arranged oOO OOo. That is one difference. The DDA40X is 10.5 feet longer than the DDA35.

The Athearn DDA40 is a model of a loco that was ordered, but never built.

The DDA40 was ordered to add to the DDA35-DDB35 fleet assigned to fast freight duty pulling reefers over routes that were once the domain of the bigboys and challengers.

By the time that production began on the DDA40s they were remodeled into the 40X version with the wide cab, and were delivered in time for the U.P.'s 100th anniv., hence the name "Centennial".

The DDA40X locos were often paired with SD40s "fast forties" that were regeared for 90+ speeds to match the DDAs.

At the time the change was made to produce the DDA40X locos, Athearn had allready released the DDA40, and with the price of tooling, they just ran with it.

The model is a closer match to the 35 than the 40X, and can be made into a passable 35 by changing the fans in the roof.

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

The other question that I have is that the UP website refers to them as DD40Xs. I have seen them identified as DDA40Xs (as you referred to them as), and DD40AXs. What is the "A" supposed to identify (A unit)? There were not any DD40X "B" units, so that does not make any sense to me either. Anybody with any insight on that? Thanks

Now I thought that those (the Athearn units) were DD35s. Does anybody have any insight on this? There were some differences (other than the cab) between a DD35 and a DD40X.

I know that Athearn still makes the stanctions you need, and you might want to check out some LHS, they might have the railing kit in old new stock. Ebay could land you something also. If worse comes to worse you could buy new stanctions and make your own hand rails.

Just off hand is your a 2 motor setup with flywheel drive?

Trying to restore an old Athearn DD-40....
Posted by 3rd rail on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 11:46 PM

I recently dug out of my scrap box an old Athearn DD-40 that I bought at a swap meet when I was a kid. After a good clean-up, lube, and replacing the couplers, it runs as good as new. However, the handrails are missing and Athearn no longer stocks them. Anyone here know where I might be able to find a set? I could try making a set myself, but I'd like to put a set of stock Athearn rails on her.   Also, has anyone here tried putting an Athearn FP-45 cab on the DD-40 to model the DDA-40X ? Seems like it might work...
