I've done quite a few decoder installs for friends and customers over the last few years, mostly Digitrax DH121's. mainly because they are inexpensive as decoders go, and easy to obtain. If there is a problem, Digitrax will replace or repair them, but there is usually a charge involved. I've got a couple of "fried" decoders in a box, that I have just "eaten" because it was easier to replace them, rather than return them.
Recently, I have started to use TCS decoders, because they are also inexpensive and have that neat 'dither' feature, that really helps hide a lot of faults in the engine itself.
Last Saturday, I was installing a decoder in a brass Pennsy K-4 for a friend of mine. Everything went normally, I programmed the chassis and gave it a brief test run to make sure it was ok before I reassembled the superstructure over it. It ran well, for about 5 feet, then it got a noticeable lurch to it and after a few moments more, it died[V]. It was a TCS T-1 decoder. I tried to reprogram the decoder, and could not communicate with it at all! So after verifying that all my wiring connections were in fact good, I grabbed another T-1 from another install job, plugged it in and it worked fine.
TCS advertises a "goof proof" warranty, so I figured I'll try it out. 6 days later I have a new decoder in my mailbox, with an invoice that says "warranty replacemen of decoder, NO CHARGE!."[:D]
It's nice to know that something is exactly as advertised these days! I think I've found a new standard to measure decoder customer service against ! (sorry D-trax!) Woo Hooooo![:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]
