OK, gospel from the webmasters is;

Dear Mr. Clod:

Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding Trains.com.  The website forum will not accept an animated avatar.  It will turn a gif into a jpg, which is what you had experienced.

If we can be of further assistance, please email customerservice@kalmbach.com, phone 1-800-533-6644 or fax 262-796-1615.  Customers outside the U.S. and Canada may contact us at 262-796-8776, ext. 421.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

So there you have it. No Hitler eating watermelon for you lot then. Pity, it's a scream.

Give it a try.  Upload the .GIF and we'll all see.  People use them in their signatures at the bottom of the posts, why not for an Avatar?

Careful about "leaders from the past," though.  It may be thought of as political, if it's anyone more recent than Napoleon.

Yeah, I did try, but as I said, the .GIF sticks on the first frame, which has no satirical content.....Sad

The same file works on other forums, I have had no response from the moderators here regarding this problem yet.

All things considered, Mark, you'll probably enjoy somewhat faster page downloads for not having them enabled.

Is that it? Those tiny little illegible images? They're hardly worth the effort described in the first post, are they?

Anyway, George, thanks for the explanation. I'll turn them back off again.

Mate, I'm not kidding, I have no sense of humour, or so I'm often told. There is no little picture on the left, under my screen name or anyone else's.

Cheers, Mark.

Go to "edit your profile" click on "Site Options" and scroll down until you see "Enable Avatars  Yes? No?"(or words to that effect). Click "Yes"  and all will be revealed to you!Wink

I must be thick. What is an "AVATAR"? And while I'm at it, what are "tags when they're at home?

Mark.

You're kidding, right? WIth over 1900 posts you don't know what an "avatar" is?

Its the little picture on the left, right under your screen name and above your location and number of posts!

Not sure about the "tags" thing though...

Guys,

Can anyone tell me if the forums will accept an animated .GIF as my avatar? I have one I like to use which pokes a bit of fun at a (in)famous leader of the past, but it won't play on my posts and because the funny bit is a few frames in... well someone took offence and instead of bringing the issue up with me directly, they moaned to the moderators, who removed my post in "New site stimks, stinks, stinks" ( I think it is fine, speed is good, but LORDY IT IS WHITE IN THE WHITE BITS!)

Surprising (to me) as it may seem, I actually had no trouble uploading mine right after the upgrade. I do feel though that the silhouettes have got to go (for those who choose not to use one) On a lighter note on those, Auto Bus made lemonade out of his with the fake nose/glasses/mustache. I laughed my you-know-what off at that, & from what I understand, so did some of the MR staff.

Thanks for the information on how to add an avatar. This picture looks much better than the grey square! Now, how do I get my website to be "clickable."  That is, how do I make it so I click on the letters, you go directly to the site.  Thanks,   Michael

Actually, I'm looking on this Avatar thing as one of the benefits of the new forum.  Back when it was blank, I could never motivate my fat butt enough to upload an Avatar.  When the new forum came along and I ended up with a gray profile that looked nothing like me at all, well, I just had to put up a picture.  That guy is named "Rocky," by the way, and he's hanging out on the center platform of the Penny Lane subway station.

I agree. I never bothered to get an avatar on the old forum. This one just demanded a nice avatar so I finally got motivated to do it. I like the new forums. Everything but the amount of threads about the bad things. Smile

Selector -- Mr. B. has it right -> the avatars are uploaded to Kalmbach's servers and they host the pics for us....

Mr. B., on some sites you can upload a tiny image file from your computer or link with a URL to a server.  It doesn't appear, to me, that you can upload a file from your computer because it requires you to past a URL in the field that I see displayed when I open my profile and click on the 'avatar' tab at the top.  Although, why would it say below everything, "remote avatars not accepted", or whatever the words were exactly?

I don't think the photo even needs to be hosted.  It's actually uploaded and stored on Kalmbach's vast server farm, so you can pick one that you've got lying around on your machine at home.  The photo gets re-sampled or whatever, so it won't look as good as it does on your desktop, but hey, it's an Avatar, not something you'd find in the Louvre.

Adding your AVATAR to Model Trains Forums
Posted by HHPATH56 on Saturday, October 18, 2008 10:36 AM

I notice that while many of you have added your AVATAR to your "Model Trains Forums Screen Name, Entry Date and number of Posts", there are still many who have not Updated your Profile to include an AVATAR of your favorite picture.  The procedure goes something like this:

You must have a digital picture "Hosted" in eg. "Photobucket".  Select the image (with Title) that you wish to use. Click on it, and momentarily "Copied", appears in a yellow box , when you click on the "option" [IMG] (at the bottom.).

Now go back to the  Model Trains Forums page.   In the right column is the boxed title "My Profile". Click on Update Profile . Inbox 1   Then, click on "Edit Profile"    Click on AVATAR box                          Click on "Yes" to Enable Avatar option                                                                                          Click on "Browse" option  to Upload Avatar                                                                                 Either fill in the "File Name", or click on downward pointing arrow to get list of images with the same File Name Click on desired image and it gets a blue frame.                                                                         Finally, click on "Open", and the computer will assure you that your properly sized AVATAR will "soon" appear on all of your Replies or Created Threads.  It may take a few minutes.  That's it!   Bob Hahn

,PS.  Darn it all!  How does one prevent a perfectly aligned set of sentences from being "missaligned" on the reposted Thread ?????
