MDC Roundhouse Kits - N scale rolling stock sale!
Posted by Roadtrp on Monday, March 22, 2004 5:57 PM
I put together my first rail car kit last night -- an MDC Roundhouse N scale gondola. It wasn't much of a challenge. The first part, literally a snap, was attaching the metal underframe to the plastic body. Inserting the little spring and coupler into the coupler box wasn't very difficult except for taxing my 51-year-old eyesight. The final step was to attach the wheel sets to the trucks, and then the trucks to the underframe. Oops -- I forgot about attaching the brake wheel, but that wasn't too tough either. All in all the assembly was about as challenging as tying my shoes, so truthfully it wasn't all that rewarding.

What it DID get me was a fairly nicely detailed and very nicely weighted car for not much money. I looked at the MDC Roundhouse website today and found that they have MANY discontinued 'N' scale kits on sale for only $3.25 - $4.49 each. With just a few minutes of work you can get a pretty nice car for very little cash. Any interested N scaler should take a few minutes and check it out.

A large percentage of my rolling stock is MDC "shake the box" kits--can't beat the quality for the price even factoring in replacing the trucks. I was disappointed to here that they
are discontinuing kits. Will check out their site--thanks for the tip![tup][:)][:D]

Most of my fleet is made up of MDC/Roundhouse kits too. In fact, I also recently ordered a bunch of those gondolas. It’s probably the best deal I’ve come across in a long time. I’m very tempted to go back and order more – and probably will.

I think that these kits are the most underrated items in N-scale (for the price these days). They have good shell detail, and are well weighted. The only thing bad about them is the trucks. But who really cares at $3.75 a pop?? Accumates work well on them!!

they are not discountinuing kits, from time to time they discountinue certain kits and sell the excess off cheap. this is due to making large batches and certain ones don't sell well or in the case of a few, they are remaking them in a newer and better looking kit. occasionally you'll see some of the discountinued ones return a few years down the road as normal kits, then end up in the discountinued discount section. so if you don'ty see a particular road now, it may show up in 6 months to a year.

MDC/Roundhouse has stated that they will continue to offer easy to assemble and quality kits for a long time to come.

I'm glad that others here have used and liked the MDC/Roundhouse 'N' scale products. I'm such a newbie to the hobby that it is good to have my opinion reinforced by those with more experience. Although this was my first Roundhouse kit, I had purchased their RTR products previously. In fact since purchasing my first MDC/Roundhouse car I haven't purchased any other brand. I'm trying to get my layout up and running without spending a fortune, and I haven't found anyone that can beat their quality at that price.

Now that I've discovered how easy it is to build their kits, and what a deal they have on their discontinued models, you can bet I’m going to buy a lot more!! [:)]

Roadtrip -

The only people that will likely turn their noses up at these Roundhouse kits are those who think they need to pay $25 and over for quality cars. [:p][:D]

When they are all weathered, I'm sure not too many will be able to tell the difference on an Ntrak layout.

Actually, I stand corrected; the higher priced cars will be the ones that are NOT weathered!
