PlumLocomotive,

I voted B&M but I would like to humbly suggest that perhaps you could break your poll down into specific schemes as both railroads used several different schemes as the years passed.

The B&M scheme I'm thinking about is the Maroon color with the multiple yellow striping. Just like on the cover of the March 2004 MRR. I believe that B&M had an identical scheme using green instead of maroon.

While I've never been too fond of the B&O's "plain blue" scheme (which is what CSX has now adopted) I really liked the scheme before it, with the blue, gray, and the black "wrap around band. That was a sharp scheme! If I'm not mistaken, I believe Athearn, if not now, offered the HO GP9 in this scheme.

Peace out! [:)][8)][4:-)][C):-)][swg][tup]

Maine Central's paint treatments closely matched B & M's paint scheme in same era that AntonioFP45 is referring to, since they had common ownership. B&o's paint scheme as used on their first gen diesels, esp. their E6s was one of the classiest paint jobs ever in railroading. Their solid royal blue later adopted looked cheap and was typical of railroadings' dark days. CSX is actually better but still kinda ugly. .

To me B&O is a more "classic" colour scheme.

B&M also had the blue with the white stripe. Anyway, I like B&O blue.

There`s a great shot of several B&O loco`s in this months april issue of MRR magazine.
I`m having a tough time deciding which direction to choose. I own a Boston & Maine and Maine Central which use the same sceme, and I also own two B&O engines.
I was ultimately going Maine Central/ B&M until I saw the express engine`s in MRR.
Drooooooooooooolllll!!
I checked the history of these railroads and the directions they`ve taken (or were taken)
also the atmosphere of the era when they were in their prime.
Very fascinating.
Now its down to who has the better paint sceme.

I'm pretty biased. Having grown up in B & O country, watched the E- and F-units fade away to the GPs, I'm with the classic B & O blue, black, and gold. I thought the sunburst pattern was to say the least, horrid.

I've been a B & O fan and modeller for 48 years so it's not a difficult choice for me...but it's not "better"....Boston & Maine fans like theirs, we B & O fans like ours.
It should be mentioned that the blue and gray scheme of the B & O, is rooted in the combined Mason-Dixon operational location of the railroad during the Civil War, and that scheme was introduced to reflect both the Union and Confederate colors.....and, from a marketing perspective, it was to try to appeal to sentiment from both "sides". [8D]
A number of contemporary modellers may be unaware of this.

Both are ugly, the BEST was ATSF Warbonnet silver and red!

Vic...those warbonnets didn't really look Silver and Red right in Smoggy L.A., for obvious reasons.....
Unless you were right up about a foot away from them, I think those colors looked like a "hazy gray" and a kind of "dark pink" when you had to look through the smog at them.

But they were damned well impressive gray & pink warbonnets, nonetheless.[;)][;)]

Both are pretty huck. But of those two, the B&O looks better.

B&O or B&M

B&O has the better of the two but I'd say the C&O E8's or any early GP7 scheme is better than both.
