I wanted to vote "All of the above". Various shades of brown is the most attractive color for boxcars. Its lovely to see a train containing all the different tones brown comes in. For the poll's sake, I voted for Tuscan red.

My favorite boxcar is a 36' USRA single sheathed car rebuilt with "reversed pattern" dreadnaught ends, Youngstown doors and retaining the vertical brake staff. The question begged for this answer.

I am steam era only so I tend to think oxide red is a decent color as well as the darker colors that can be approximated by mixing tints with roof brown. Most standard colors in use through the early 40's were pretty drab, especially after a few years service.

Steam, the heaven-sent vapor.

Boston and Maine. I can remember as a kid standing at horseshoe curve right before dusk when all the cars were red except for this one freshly painted B&M 50 footer that was blue with black doors. I watched that car all the way around the curve until it was out of sight.

Roadtrp, I'd hate to say, but it didn't come in a regular five stick pack. They were wrapped individually and and I don't really recall the name brand. This was way back when, if ya now what I mean.

Ok, I'll tell ya, but promis not to laugh. I like the old NYC Pacemaker cars with the red over gray color scheme. Why? Because I remember them as a kid and there was a gum out then with kind of the same type red and gray wrapper. Told ya not to laugh!!!

I like the yellow Railboxes very much!

In the 70s when I was growing up, Railboxes seemed to be EVERYWHERE! Now they're virtually gone, into other paint schemes.
Once in a "blue moon" I'll see a yellow one, usually very faded and rusting. Likely ready for scrapping.

I equally like Santa Fe's red and black "Shock Control" scheme from the 60s. Very colorful.

Old, dusty, short ones from TOC.

Randy

PS I agree with you on polls. I answered the "favorite ALCO question" with "Cooke".

RailBox yellow of course.......because turning them into my road name is as simple as painting over the logo and the blacked out numbers...just like the prototype......and viola!

Mineral Red, because that was the official company freight equipment color for the CB&Q until 1958.

What is your fav. Box car?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 18, 2004 1:24 PM
[}:)]Poking some fun at the FAV. Loco polls. You know, I love them, but can't figure out why. Oh, by the way, if you don't see one that is your FAV. BOX CAR in the poll, don't be afraid to jot it down here! I'm sure I missed someones favorite and will be taken to task for it. That's good, we all learn from our mistakes!
