Problem with GE's they are so slow to load. Once you got them going, they could really pull, but I really did not like the response. Hard to get a feel for what they're doing. I voted for the C30-7 just to have something to vote for.

[:)][:D][8D][;)]I got to see plenty of Seaboard Coast Line U33 and U36Bs in action. Since the 70s were the days before the madated "quieting down" of locomotives, the diesels in these were LOUD and could make windows in houses vibrate when throttling up with heavy loads. [:0][;)][tup] I loved it! They "chugged" compared to EMD dash 2s turbocharged "whines" (which also sounded neat). At full throttle, you could hear U-Boats from 2 miles away!

The dash 7s were simply new, upgraded U Boats. I've heard that many engineers weren't to fond of U boats or Dash 7s as they were slower to load and electrical problems could surface often. [sigh]

If we're including "electrics" then I'll add the sleek looking New Haven EP5a.

Dharmon,

Westinghouse also contributed greatly to the GG1. Have to admit that It really is a star in the electrics class.

Why were the electrics excluded? GE made some wonderful juice jacks. My favorite is the E2b. But I like the E44 and E40 also.

Favorite GE? HAH! I don't really like them, however, I can't say no to BN U30Cs.
Plus, what's the difference between an AC4400CW and a C44ACCTE?

BTW: Someone mentioned on the TRAINS FORUM that at least one E33 electric is preserved in a Connecticutt museum. I'm so glad I got to see these giants operate when I was a kid. They were in New Haven colors for a while after the Penn Central merger.

Paul3 referred to them as "mishapen bricks" on a Penn Central thread last year. To me, that body style was symbolic of durability and horsepower.

C44ACTE is just UP's designation for AC4400CWs.

Actually, my favorite GE is the class W electric (B-D-D-B or 4-8-8-4) built for the Great Northern in 1947 for service on the Cascade Tunnel. What a HUNK of handsome locomotive that was! Sorry if I start a 'flaming' war, but I think GE diesels are uglier than mud fences.

[#ditto] A man after my own heart. If I have to pick a stinking diesel it would be the 44 tonner, mostly' cause it looks a lot like a steeple cab. Rob

UP has diff kinds of AC4400's

AC4400CW's= older CN&W, SP styles, and UP with pilot mounted ditch lights

AC44CTE's= Advance DPU technology, and the big AC box on the side is different to, also the radiators...so there is a diff.

For diesels I chose 44 tonners--they're cute and entertaining, both the prototype and the model. 70 tonners are fun too, kind of like you left an S1 out in the rain and it shrank.

I'm definitely with the juice jack group. My top GE is the E2B "screamers", with the E44a running second. And I would add the original Metroliners to the list. Honorable mention would have to go to those giant electrics on the Great Nothern and on the Virginian.

My favorite was not on the list, so I will post a picture of it.

GE 132 ton centercab as built for Ford and later sold to the Wellsville Addison And Galeton RR. There were only 8 of these critters built.

for anybody who is interested there is a link on my website on how I scratch built this. Just click on the "how to" button on the home page and the link will be there.

Let us not forget the U25-C. The LS&I operated the last one, and it had a unique "howling" sound that accompanied the usual FDL chug. 2501 was not immune to shooting flames out of it's stack once in a while, too!
