This has been known for many years. Unfortunately the "educators" took it to heart and foisted teaching "whole word" on the schools to replace phonics. We now have several generations who are largely of functionally illiterate.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

Six is correct. The first time I saw it (printed on paper) I said three and so did everyone else I showed it to. Being that it was posted on forum gave you more time to read and count.
For some reason our brains don't pick up the F in of.
Print out the paragraph and show it to other folks. Most will say three!
