I really like the bulldog Fs, but when it came to Styling, Speed and Brute Horsepower, the Santa Fe FP45 in the War Bonnet scheme wins in my book hands down!

I'm currently working on equipping my Athearn unit with DCC/Sound and full lighting effects!

The family resemblance between the FT, to F9 is so close as to be undistinguishable to the general public. I lilke them all the same.

It may be aerodynamic,But, they are hard to see what's behind you when you do backup moves. I knew an engineer who worked for the Utah Railway, and he had no kind words for the F45 that they had.

The Fs are all great, the F9s I like the best. But the bulldog nose is hard to beat!

F7's here.
I like the F9's as well. Rode behind a A-B-A set of them on the Algoma Central's Canyon Train on an ex-California Zephur Dome Car "Silver Palace".

NOW YOU'RE TALKING MY FAVORITE LOCOMOTIVES![swg][swg] The F-3. Like those Burlington Route "Graybacks" the best out of any paint scheme, although I also like C&NW, GN, NP, Lackawanna, and Rock Island F's. Any shot of the Q's Chicago to Denver CD in the 1940's behind F's is a great picture of a hotshot freight.

Saw a picture of a Santa Fe FP45 for the first time today, and wow! I must say it's a BEAUTIFUL locomotive! Does the BNSF still use them?

4884BigBoy,

BNSF retired the last FP45s sometime in 1999. Engineers didn't like the lack of rearward visibility and the 20 cylinder diesels were "fuel hogs". Good news is that seven or eight of them went to museums, so they won't be extinct. Go to your search engine and type in "FP45 Incarnations". You'll see several sites that you can explore on these 20 cylinder giants. Wealth of info on the Santa Fe "Big Jacks" as they were nicknamed. [;)][8D][:)]

What makes these units special is that: [swg][tup][swg][tup]
They were the last locomotives assigned to pull the Santa Fe "Super Chief" before Amtrak took over passenger service.

They were used on Santa Fe's hot shot "Super C" freight service with plenty of 85+ mph running at times. This was the fastest scheduled freight in the U.S. up until 1975 or 76.

I've never herd them called "covered wagons", but I understand why. You can't see anything behind you unlike the SDs or GPs.

Yeah back in the early 1970s when I was a youngster I used to hang out at the Ladysmith Wi. station at times watching the trains . One of the crew members came up to me & started to chat a bit with me , I was asking a bunch of questions about various cars & locos on his train. I mentioned to him how neat those old units were. They turned out to be if I remember right , An F-7 A unit, an F-7 B unit & several other more modern units. I was told that they call them the covered wagons , Because they looked like a western wagon with its canopy . & I heard others reply to them as that also in the comming years. So ever since then the nic name kind of stuck to my mind.

The FP9 is my favorite. They looked the best in CP's classic maroon and grey scheme.I got a cab ride in one in VIA service when I was five that hooked me.I'm waiting for Atherean to do a genesis A unit. That will be sweet. TB

[#ditto] of course and add a B unit with it. Yes, indeed with its huge plumes of black diesel smoke while powering up and the loud rocking idle sounds.

Yikes, just realized the date of this thread. What the heck.

The C.N.W. is the only owner of the FP-9 in U.S. so that's my favorite.
