Hidden Kadee electric uncoupler - possible?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 14, 2004 12:56 AM
I've seen the article in MR on improving the Kadee electric uncoupler - but is there any way to get a hidden uncoupler that is electric?

I'd sure like to be able to use delayed uncoupling in my new layout, and I've got kids who may not be the most gentle with an "uncoupling tool" - reaching between cars.... yikes...

Anyway - I'm looking for something that will provide for delayed uncoupling, but eliminate the accidental uncoupling that comes from the permanent magnets mounted under or between the rails.

Any ideas?

Kadee makes an electric uncoupler magnet that mounts under the track for HO scale. I would think that it would also work in n scale. You could hide it with ballast or scenery. Hope this helps Dave

Whoops... should have posted that my scale is HO.

I've seen the Kadee electromagnetic uncoupler - but that has those plates that have to stick up through the track... I'm looking for something more invisible...

Thanks for your suggestion, though, Dave.

It is my understanding that with an intensifier plate that it will fit under the trrack ties. That way it can be hidden.

My cheapness solution. Removable under tie magnets.
I have them sitting on a small piece of the handy man's secret weapon so that I can slide them out and avoid random uncoupling. I have small pieces of painted cork roadbed that fit the opening that magnet removal makes which fits good enough to fool the cameras.

The biggest advantage is not the ability to 'turn it off' but the ability to have many different uncoupling positions serviced with only a few magnets. This of course makes for an even cheaper solution for all your uncoupling needs.

Making this truly invisible would be easy by once again employing the HMSW and attaching it under the ties, sticky side up. Ballast the track as normal and lo, you can now lift up a flap and insert the magnet and hide it.

I like your idea Tony, but I myself would just as soon manual uncouple my cars as to move a magnet around. Just a thought here. Use an under the track uncoupler magnet mounted on a hinge that could swing up into position by a manual push cable like some use for their switches. When not being used it could swing down to not effect the couplers.
