Thanks Tom,
That is exactly what I was looking for and your model is really inspiring. I will start gathering the materials this week-end.

I scratch built a concrete elevator last year and what you need to realize is that you have to selectively compress it otherwise it will not look right. I wanted an elevator that would load out 100 unit trains and theyll typically have silos roughly 40' x 140'. Mine ended up being 3.5" x 13" which is about 25' x 100'.
Heres a link to some pictures and more details.

If you wanted ones closer to real elevators, I would use 4-6" PVC. The height varies but 12-24 inches would be in the range. Taller for a huge major elevator, shorter for a more rural one.

I am not sure there is an average diameter. I measures a couple in the Buffalo, NY area several years ago and found they varied. I do not have my notes here at work with me but, if memory serves correctly one of them I measured was about 40' (12m) in diameter. I think most of them are smaller than that though. 2"Id PVC scales out to around 18 feet which is roughly the size of the walthers kit. Hope this helps.

If one wants to scratch build these circular concrete grain elevators in HO scale to look similar to the Walthers ADM elevators (I do not have access to a kit to check the diameter) what is the average diameter and height of your USA concrete grain elevators? Alternatively, could someone please measure the diameter and height of a Walthers ADM HO scale elevator and I will try to match this with the closest diameter PVC pipe?
