Paraquim:
Are you using DC or DCC for controls? If you're using a DC power pack, you have to turn the pack up to where the locomotive JUST STARTS MOVING and then use the hand-held remote from there. The loco will not work with just the remote. And if your Big Boy is anything like my Genesis 4-6-6-4, it takes quite a bit of power from the pack to the rails for the remote to take over. Set your power pack to where the sound is on and the drivers are just starting to move, then take over with the remote. IMO, this is one of the drawbacks of the Genesis locos in DC, they really can't be run with any other locos at the same time.

Get yourself a blueline big boy.
Problem solved.
Nuff said.
I know exactly what you mean. It's the reason I went to a Blueline, although that's not been perfect.
Anyway what I found was that you have to "reset" the system each time you use the engine. It's somewhere in the manual. Then it it should be OK - but in my case cured only about 80% of the abrupt stoppages.
If you can't find the section let me know and I'll tell you how to do it.
I'm operating in DC or should I say VHS?
Paraquim, I second checking the plug that goes to the engine. On it being new so the wheels could not be drity, check anyway. My new PCM Y6-b did the samething, stop, go, stop and go. Wheels on the tender had some kind of a coating on them.
I seem to have bad luck with engines at times. I bought 2 Athearn Big Boys, both where returned for a refund. Yet, my LHS as sold around 25 and I am the olny one that had a problem?

Have you checked the connection between the tender and the engine? If it's loose it will move a little and then stop in a random way. One of my PCM Y6b was like that.

Have you checked the wheels for dirt?
Sounds like it hit a spot of dirty track and didn;t have enought poer to get through it to start off. That's par for the course.
