Steam & diesel locomotive service stations
Posted by liquidcross on Friday, February 27, 2004 1:02 PM
My N scale layout's going to have both steam and diesel locomotives running on it, so I plan to have a service/maintenance area for each. What exactly would those entail? I heard Kalmbach publishes a book on them, but I have no idea what it's called, or where to begin looking.

The book you are talking about is called "THE MODEL RAILROAD'S GUIDE TO LOCOMOTIVE SERVICING TERMINALS". You can find it on this web site ( http://store.yahoo.net/kalmbachcatalog/12228.html ), at most hobby shops or at http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/400-12228 Another excellent book is called "Steam Locomotive Coaling Stations and Diesel Locomotive Fueling Facilities " by Thomas W. Dixon, Jr. You can find it at http://www.tlcrailroadbooks.com/cgi-bin/tlcstore.pl?user_action=detail&catalogno=x22

Well worth the investment as I am using it to figure out what I need for a full steam servicing yard/terminal

The title escapes me at the moment, but If the first book gsetter refers to is the Marty Mcguirk book, BUY IT. Excellent book, highly recommended.

Got Photos? Is there anyone out there that would share photos of their fuel pit?

Snake, if I had a scanner I'd send you some but, as I mentioned above, "Steam Locomotive Coaling Stations and Diesel Locomotive Fueling Facilities " by Thomas W. Dixon, Jr. , has excelent prototype photos of diesl fuel pits. You can find it at http://www.tlcrailroadbooks.com/cgi-bin/tlcstore.pl?user_action=detail&catalogno=x22
