I saw a shaved rug - doormat used for wheat,
( we have doormats made of the right color of yellow/gold-brown fibers overhere in holland), maybe these are available in the US as well )
they kind of shaved or cut the top of the fibres to take out the flat and even look

In Indiana wheat is planted in October and harvested in July.So for 6 months fields are green and for three weeks wheat is amber waves of grain.Maybe try fake fur,die it and cut it short. Joe G.

Ok cnwfan, now this may seem off the wall here but take alook at some stuffed animals that are the right color. You could "skin them" and use their "hide". hmmm, my faithful chihuahua is the right color and even has fleas to simulate the bugs found in wheat fields. Nahh, that ain't such a good idea[:O][:O][:O][}:)][}:)][}:)][(-D][(-D][(-D] Better stick with the stuffed kind.

Fake fur is plentiful and comes in many different colors--it is excellent for simulating long grass. One tip I have been told is that it's better to get a lighter color and dye it than to try to use green fake fur for grass--it is a fluorescent hue that is very hard to dye. You can also shave bits of it with hair clippers to simulate mowed patches or shorter grass.
