Some cool shots
Posted by dave9999 on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 9:47 PM
I took these today on the I-10 Escambia Bay Bridge out of Pensacola. The bridge in
the distance is the CSX mainline. The span is three miles in length. Some are pretty blurry, but I was doing about 70 mph at the time. BTW those are UP locos leading the way. I usually only see CSX around here. Is it common for UP to use
these tracks? These look a lot better full size, but my web site won't allow full size
uploads.

Sorry Dave, I'll take your word for it on the train, but that van in your mirror seemed to be coming up fast. Be careful on the road.

Sorry, Dave, but not cool. If you are driving at 70 mph, your attention should be on the road NOT taking pictures of a passing train! This is worse than using a cell phone. If you were a passenger, well then ok.

Hey Dave,

[:)]I've crossed this bridge before. It's amazing how the trains look like they're Z scale!

The Amtrak Sunset Limited also uses this line on its way west from Florida to California.

This is the CSX line that continues westward towards Louisiana and eastward towards Jacksonville, Florida. The UP units may be run through power or on the "power use" agreement with CSX.

Even 15 years ago, this was rare. Now it's very common. UP, BNSF, and even Canadian Pacific power can be commonly seen in Flordia. There are still units running around in Southern Pacific and Rio Grande colors; better take pictures while you still can!!! A friend told me that in 2000, even EMD Tunnel Motors made trips to Florida.

On my trip to El Paso, Texas 3 years ago, I perked up when at a stop, I heard a locomotive horn. Excited, I was expecting Santa Fe, MKT, or UP power. My face fell when I saw a trio of CSX units!

"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"

Umm yeah.....I'm familiar with that bridge too, except from like 4500 feet headed north towards Whiting..........

Probably pooled power, run throughs headed home or power swaps. I've been seeing alot of CSX and NS units out here on the west coast. In fact I saw two NS units at San Diego port this morning.

Oh yeah and watch out for the speed trap on the east bound side of the bridge...

BB,
Obviously you've never crossed this bridge. 70 is slow[:D] !! That's why they regulary set up the speed traps that dharmon reffered to. And dharmon, they now set them up east and west bound. It's not unusual to see six or eight troopers in this area, especially around a holiday. The trick is to slow down at the 18.8 mile callbox. That's about a 1/4 mile from the end heading east. Just a little tip for anyone traveling or railfannig around here. Dave

Thanks, I've live here my entire life and seldom catch a train crossing the bay at the
same time I am. Just a matter of being there at the right time. Dave

Dave,

Noticed the DOD sticker on your truck windshield. You work on base there?

No, I bought the truck from my brother in law who was in the Navy. I just haven't removed the sticker.
How long has it been since you have been in the area? It's really growing around here. Lots of building going on, both residential and commercial. The Whiting Field
area is growing as well. If it's been more than ten years since you've seen Milton,
you probably wouldn't even recognize it. Dave

Last time I was in P'cola was summer of '99 for a few days. I was in Eglin last year but didn't really leave that area. It been almost fifteen years since I lived there....haven't been to Whiting since then....
