You are correct in that they just a AC variant. I don't know if this will help you but there are some good photo's on the Norfolk Southern Photo Archives of GP38AC's. Keeping in mind that these ones are nearly all high-hoods. I'll try to find out more on the CV ones for you!

I'm interested in modeling one of the 2nd gen diesels leased to the CV by parent GTW. The CV roster lists them as GP-38AC's. Is this merely an AC variant of the GP-38? I have been unable to find information on this locomotive. I can find few differences from a GP-38-2 in the photos I have (no little oval window on long hood, slightly different intake grills). Can anybody steer me in the right direction as far as what model I should start from and what details I might need to change? I currently own an Athearn GP-38-2 that I would use if the conversion isn't too serious.
