I haven't been UP fan since time began (my time at least). Except for the big power they are fond of, there isn't much I like about them. Once they started gobbling up everything west of the Mississippi River and some of it east of there, things haven't been the same, of course nothing could top the corporate greed going on there today. Gimme a C & EI "Buzzsaw", Mopac "Thunder Chicken" and the days when the Northwestern ran across from my parents house. Just think, 25 years ago I disliked the U.P., looks like I was ahead of the game.

Least favorite??? Mine!! You know, the one in my basement!! It is virtually always bankrupt, suffers from maintenance woes, never able to expand to it's full potential, and operates rarely because of competing time schedules.
As far as the REAL ones, I like 'em all. Business is business, so I can't fault UP for doing what every other company does.

The Pennsylvania Railroad- My grandpa was an engineer for the Big Four(NYC) so all of my family were raised thinking that anything tuscan red was inferior. We knew where the butter on our bread came from.
Of course, when they merged, I couldn't understand how two diametrically opposed entities could ever become one. No worry, they did'nt.
I did'nt like PC for the longest time, then I slowly became used to them, and now I dearly miss the old multi colored poorly maintained barely running trains.
And one of my best memories is of a Pennsy passenger (I like freight) consist, windows warmly glowing, kicking up the snow speeding through the windswept cornfields of northern Indiana.
I sure miss those days.

I'd like to say CSX because of the way they treat their crews but I am biased because I used to work for them a few years ago. I must say though, they really ought to get rid of their initials and just go with a proper name. What's wrong with Chessie-Seaboard Railroad Corporation?

I dislike UP. The most overrated road out there, and Armor Yellow is not my favourite livery. And I'm not a big CP fan. Why'd they have to kill off the TH&B, Algoma Eastern and Kettle Valley? And what's with the Pacman, although their new Golden Rodent scheme is nice.

I'm also not an IC fan. Only railroad that ever ate another one and had it pay them for the priviledge. HH is killing CN. Although having two E9's in green and gold was nice.

What do I like? CN and (most) predecessors, NS and predecessors, KCS, Algoma Central (And it's long-dead sister, the Algoma Eastern). I do miss the days of interesting power on CN though, before '98 all the MLW units and widecab GMD's were quite the sight.

And the winner is UP!!! I agree with FJ AND G, those were great points. I remember seeing a Mopac in UP paint scheme- YUK! That killed Mopac! I know they will do that with SP soon! Close second goes to those Mexican Railroads, N de M, They will cut up a Alco diesel and put a Cab forword front end on it ! Come to think of it, I don't have nothing against UP, I do have a problem on those people who are running that company and those other people who is allowing UP to swallow up our railroads. SP was not allowed to merge with SCL,AT&SF, RI, But UP was given rights for bigger mergers!! Increadable! POLITICS!!!

How come you don't like Kansas City Southern?

Maybe I'm just a little partial to them because they own the line that goes thru my town?

I Love UP, all of them really, even NS. Canadian roads suck. Except GT and SOO. Then again, CP is ok, but they use far to many SD40-2s. We want variety!

Hmmmmm. This is a real hard question.

Give me a moment to think please.

OK, ready.

Let's see, perhaps I can think of 3:

1. for worst merger would have to UP

2. for shutting down the most scenic and vital stretch of track (at least vital for railfans at Royal Gorge); the second honor will have to go to UP

3. for invoking fees on model trains and therefore depriving poor barefoot children and elderly poor on fixed incomes in nursing homes, a chance to play with trains, I'd have to give the honors to UP.

There you have it folks, I've managed to think of 3 railroads that are my least favorite.

Mr. Love, where's the "BNSF fan/mrlove" line at the end of your post? It would add that nice little touch to any UP administrator reading this thread.[:D]

The BNSF-The road that actually recognizes the lines it's made up of!

The UP has taken over 7 RR's already ok!
And that STUPID railroad and it's paint sceme has't changed one bit!......how BORING!
I can't see how UP can charge CNW fans extra for CNW locomotives even though the the CNW foolishly gave them selves to this trashed up railroad anyway!
UP is hated so much that Im still not going to stop buying the HO CNW locomotives, because I still have a place In heart for the CNW RR.....so UP you can ki$$ my [censored] [:D].

I hate Guilford. I hate Guilford Gray paint.Guilford gray is BLACK, by all stretches of the imagination(not to mention that it's freakin' UGLY). As far as I know , they still owe Waterville, ME over [:(!]$300K [:(!]in back-taxes, for the former Maine Central yard, in Waterville. To me , that sounds like a shady deal!
I also don't understand why they scrapped almost the entire MEC fleet shortly after thier buyout(I'm sure some of those locos were beyond affordable repair, but it still seems like an awful waste of $$ to scrap them, and not use much of anything from them!). I still think they should've kept the Harvest Gold and Pine Green livery, and maybe just add the"G" on it somewhere(certainly would have saved.....hmmmmm, maybe [:(!]$300K [:(!]or more......in paint jobs!!)

I don't like CN because they took over Illinois Central. Then again, when I think about it, I don't like the Illinois Central either because they abandoned a lot of lines and took over the GM&O. So........... I come to the conclusion that if railroads were run like they were in the 1940's and 50's, I wouldn't have any dislike towards any of them, but like that's really going to happen again.

I just love "those greedy SOB's" that run the UP. May they get rich in peace and continue to pay my annual stock dividend.

Least favorite railroad? Just how can anything that runs on rails be disliked? Burnt on paint? Hell, gives 'em character. Mergers? A necessary evil of our economic times if rail is to survive. Sounds more like some of you got your nose tweaked by something a railroad did, or something you think a railroad did. In time, all those negative passions will subside and the railroads will still be running. I can hardly wait to see what the future brings.

A bad railroad is one that has torn up the rails and gone entirely to trucks, and I am not aware of any that have done that just yet. Soooooo - - - - there are no bad railroads.

UP may have wobbled on their PR lately, but I read somewhere they are the only 19th century flag still around in the 21st century. Gotta hand it to them for that.
My vote goes to Wisconsin Central, for being party to the screwing of our New Zealand national railways

PENN CENTRAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (or was it the pennsy?)

Whomever decided to destroy one of the greatest monuments to the mettle of New Yorkers ever - the original Pennsylvania Station.

"The old station is now replaced by a subterranean rat maze euphamistically called Penn Station"

Amtrak provides good intercity local service. Examples would be the California Corridors and the East Coast Corridors. The major profit hit comes from the lon-haul cross country trains.
