Empire Nothern Models

I wholeheartedly endorse Empire Northern.  Tim is one of the best out there.  Great prices and great customer Service!  I know the family fairly well having taught several of his siblings years ago.  Other than that I have no connection with the company except that I buy most all my DCC equipment from him.

Here's the middle ground.

Empire Nothern Models - 10 pack of NCE D13SRJ decoders for 119.95.  That would be $12/decoder.  Not quite $10 per, but not too far off either.  These are full function decoders with 4 light function outputs, torque compensation, all the lighting effects needed, 128 step decoders.  These are a much better decoder than the Digitrax D123 at a better price.

As for $100 Zephyrs - ?????  Not my choice of started systems.

Oh Yea - all prices USD

David,10 for 149 works out to be $14.90 ea not $10.00 ea that we all have read about...Not bad for a 4 function decoder.

Here's what I call a full functional decoder. The ones that support all the fun stuff including back EMF and 128 speed steps.

As far as the topics...I leave that to your research capabilities

Don,For what you want to do the EZ DCC will work.In fact I have a friend that uses one in the same manner as you want to and he's quite please.

I may use one on my next ISL which will be in N Scale.

Sorry to disappoint but,I used DCC before.I even owned a DigiTraxx Empire Builder II.I sold that but, thankfully I kept my 4 UT2 throttles..Those will come handy when both HO clubs complete the DCC change over.

Reread my DCC vs DC replies and you will note no where did I ever state I was anti DCC..

The only thing I am anti DCC about is the so called cheap prices like those fabled $100.00 Zephyrs and $10.00 decoders that we all have read about.I haven't found any $10.00 full function decoders yet.

I am anti DCC myths about how you can't operated in DC.

I am pro DCC or DC as a modelers choice.

Sorry, Tyler.  You'll need to add ~$60 to that price tag to get the Zephyr from Tony's or anyone else:

Yes, the Zephyr is a better and a more power starter system.  However, it's a mute point.  Don already knows and understands the limitations of the E-Z Command.  It was discussed in another thread.  Don only needs one for a new 2' x 8' point-to-point switching shelf layout that he's building and his desire is "to keep it simple".  Don is just asking where he can get one at the best price.

The Zephyr is a very good system, if you're going to be changing CV's and/or running many trains at once. If all you're going to do is run one or two, maybe three trains and don't care about changing CV's or making up loco consists then the Bachmann product will serve well. I've been using one for over a year now and it has served me well.

I'd stay away from the EZ-command..... it is extremly limited, (no one-touch functions, can only have 10 locos, no programming apart from adresses, etc) so I'd reccomend the Digitrax Zephyr. I have one, and it can handle 10 locos at once, with as many as you want ready to operate by pushing like 3 buttons then punching in the adress.

It has a full number keyboard, one-touch functions, 3 or 4 modes of full programming, etc. In short, a much better product. Tony's Trains has it for around $100. Plus you can easiliy expand with the 2 loconet ports on the back.

Just myMy 2 cents [2c]

(No I don't work for Digitrax, just giving my honest opinion.)

Tom

I have one in a box in the train room.  I used it for a couple of years.  It works perfectly for what it does, which isn't much.  It can control 10 trains on a small layout.  It can turn the lights on and off.  It can control bells and horns or whistles.  It can not program other than changing the loco address to and address from 1 to 9.  It is 1 amp.  It has functions F1 - F9.  It can control 1 DC loco. It is not expandable.  It was designed by Lens.  It IS compatable with Lens boosters, but I cannot imagine why anyone would.

What it DID do was show me that DCC is far superior to DC.  I now have a Digitrax Chief.

That seems to be about the general price range. For something that seemingly nobody wants, Bachmann sells a bunch of them.

Don,

Wholesaletrains.com is where I originally bought mine for $53.  It looks like it's up over $62 now.

http://www.wholesaletrains.com/Detail.asp?Scale=HO&Item=RGBVCW&ID=200401356

I've only ordered from this vendor the one time but they shipped it quickly (3 days).

I never buy anything without first checking MB Klien

The EZ Command DCC is $69.99

A very limited set, but if you only have a couple of engines it may well be all you need.

Considering Walther's want $120 for the same thing $79.89 is a very good price.

I'm not really familiar with the pricing of the Bachmann DCC system, but here's a price that seems to be pretty reasonable.  And Litchfield Station is one of the best companies on the Intenet.
