I made mine from MDF using a router jig to make it round.  The interior is stacked rairoad ties (I saw a prototype for this in Oregon).  The ring rail is code 55 rail spiked to ties.  To make it round, I set the 1/2 length ties (using a spacing jig that I made), then I made a drilling jig to pre drill the spike holes, then it was easy to make the rail reside on the circle.  I soldered th ends together.

Hello,

Regarding the 1/8 masonite turntable, you cut the masonite as tall as you need for the pit wall and bend it around the pit floor. Take a look at the link, you will also see the plans for the Geneva Drive. I tried the link without trouble. You can also type the link in your browser.

I made my turntable pit and walls with plaster.  I drew the cross section on a piece of paper and then cut out a thick piece of styrene with half of the drawing and an extension of about 2" at the ground level.  i epoxied a brass tube to the styrene and dropped it in the hole in the center.  then just add enough plaster to screed it using the two inch extension as a handle to the finished shape.  the whole pit took less tha  one half hour to make.

Here's a link to both a source for the pit ring and an excellent tutorial for building the whole turntable:

I couldn't display the link in the above post. Could a guy laminate 1/8 masonite to the desired depth, then cut the diameter with a jigsaw? It would need 2 cuts to get the width of the pit wall. you'd already end up with layers you could then scribe to represent stone blocks. Add a full piece to the bottom for the mechanism.

I haven't tried this, but it sounds do-able. You would most likely have some sanding to do.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I don't want the atlas style turntable and I have access to a metal shop to make the parts I need for the mechanism but I don't want to turn the pit wall as I don't think machinists look too fondly upon wood flakes on the machines. I'll look into speaker rings.

This is my photo-essay on "pit-bashing" an Atlas turntable into True Pit:

http://www.trains.com/trccs/forums/1162790/ShowPost.aspx

I made the pit rail by slicing a piece of Atlas flex-track in half the long way and bending it into a circle.

The pit walls are made from stone wall castings.  I used a Dave Frary mold (http://www.mrscenery.com/) and bent the wall around a form to get the right curvature after the Hydrocal had set up, but before it hardened (about 10 minutes after pouring.)

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Hello,

The turntable can be built from 1/8 tempered masonite. It is quite simple.

Goto www.yesterdaysradio.com/rr/genevadriveturntable.pdf

This is a 15 degree turntable. I have also built 10 degree turntables.

The one shown is a surface mount. A pit style can be built by making the sidewall higher.

Use carpenter's glue to fasten the sidewall to the pit floor.

My link I was going to give from my favorites appears to be dead.

There is a company that custom cuts speaker rings in any size you need from masonite in varying thicknesses. This has been used by several modelers as a source for turntable pit walls.  I'm going to look them up when I build my second turntable.  Google custom speaker rings...

Here's a link to turntable building: http://www.housatonicrr.com/DIY_Turntable.htm

A pit ring is something you would build rather than buy if you're cobbling up a turntable on your own.

Can't answer the second question.

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.
