Three dome tank cars...
Posted by Tracklayer on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 11:59 PM

Hello all.

Do any of you guys ever actually run three dome tank cars?. I've got a couple in my collection, but don't recall using them except maybe once or twice in all the years I've owned them. There's just something I can't get past about the way they appear...

I had one.  I received it for Christmas one year and couldn't get it together just right (seemed to always list to one side or another) so ultimatley it got scrapped.  If I ever got it together just right then I would probably run it.

3 dome tank cars lived on in train sets and in the Athearn catalog long after they had pretty much (if not literally) disappeared from the prototype rails.  You have to go a ways back in the Car Builder's Cyclopedia to find them shown as currently available cars.   Maybe somebody with a complete set of CBC's could say when.

A three dome tank car handled three different products, so in a sense a multiple dome tank car was shipping less than carload lots of a product.  LCL business eventually was lost to trucks.  And I suspect plenty of times the wrong load was put in the wrong compartment.

I've got 3 of them - 2 Deep Rock and one Mobilgas.  My late-Transition-era layout is fine with the timing.  I kind of like them.

Three dome tank cars disappeared a long time ago.  However, there are a lot of modern multi-compartment tank cars running around without the high expansion domes.  Like the old cars, they carry multiple commodities or the same commodity for different destinations.  It's too bad there is not an updated version available as a model.

Here in Phoenix a local oil distributor receives about a car a week with different viscosities of lube oils.

Just the other day I saw a photo of a prototype tank car with FIVE domes.  It was used to carry wine (Cab, Merlot, Zin, Pinot, Chardonnay, anyone?).  How I miss the variety of the 1950s (and earlier decades)!, which is why I model that era.

Mark: Could you post a photo? That must've looked WEIRD!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I have two of them, although I never run them. They look odd to me too, plus they're about 50 years too old! I think I have a Mobil one and a Deep Rock one. Wonder if any other companies owned them....Laugh [(-D]

I think SP had some as well. I think Precision Scale made some in HO scale.

Here's a 4 dome wine car.

I have a few shell chemical cars in Athearn RTR in the fleet. I dont have anything for them to haul so they sit in the box.

I would like to see more twin, three and other domes... my problem is lack of knowledge of how to properly use them in operation.. what to put in the things, loading different products etc and whys.
