Real defect detectors are a series of trackside sensors with silver colored metal boxes of various sizes and a large radio antenna to broadcast the results to the train crew. A set of defect detectors near Benson, Arizona, alaong the UP line, is strung out for nearly a 3 mile stretch of track. Each of the metal boxes is a different size, and there is one large box with air conditioners and the radio antenna near the center, surrounded by a chain link fence. This particular installation has overhead electrical lines going to it, a diesel generator in one of the buildings, and solar panels, so they will have uninterrupted power. Another set between Tucson and Casa Grande, Arizona, along the same line, appears to be of very similar construction.

Dougal,
Is this the article ? Train defect detection installations, Model Railroader, March 1984, page 94. Article also published in Trackwork and Lineside Detail for Your Model Railroad , page 94. (DEFECT, DETECTOR, "GRAYSON, WALTER", "ODEGARD, GORDON", PROTOTYPE, MR )

CNWfan5525,
I couldn't find the detectors at NJ International, Inc.'s online site. Found a TrainWeb thread about them, where someone thought the detectors were available in etched brass from an oufit called Athabasca Systems. Tried to locate Athabasca Systems with a Google search, but couldn't. Checked Athabasca Scale Models Limited's online site to see if the detectors were one of their products, but again the detectors were not listed. Perhaps one of the Canadian gentlemen can help.

Anyone make defect detectors that I could use for the AS&N? I saw somthing in a old MR (early 80's) about one. Thanks!
