I find it interesting that a subject like this gets soo many responses, Sigh [sigh] when some of the other subjects.....like a newby looking for information or someone to answer a question for them.....gets low responces (in some cases)

Perfect example..........lets post a question on what is the best DCC system (from a newby inquiering)........how many answers will be negative about "Yet another stupid question about the best DCC system" instead of explaining how to use the search feature? Or giving a postive answer to someone who made need a quiding hand from a seasoned Model railroader?

I read the subject line of everything on this web page...if it doesn't interest me, I DON'T READ IT...

I'm with you on the point of when threads become a "alpha male/person/poster" pedestal then it becomes an arguement and not a discussion, BUT    I will say that with VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS the forum has been more civil/friendly/and IMFORMATIVE for the past week or so. On that note I'll say good job to all for thinking it thru before typing!

I pay no attention to most threads as they have no apparent interest to me.  That doesn't mean they shouldn't be posted or that they couldn't be of interest to others.  I "cherry-pick" about 15-20%.  My wish is that people starting threads would put more accurate descriptions in the titles so we won't waste time looking at those that aren't of interest or overlook those that might.  For instance, there is a big difference between a title "look at this" compared to "here is photo of prototypical searchlight car."

If it is a violation of forum policy to inspire someone to obtain an item up for auction on ebay  SPECIFIC ITEM FOR SALE would it not also be a violation for anyone here to inspire someone to purchase a specific item thru a LHS or other point of sale by us recommending it. Example, if someone posts a thread about atlas turnouts and receives replys saying that another specified manufacturer has supplied what has been a higher quality/more reliable product (at least in the opinion of the one making the reply) and the OP (or other person reading) is inspired to buy it, what is the difference? IMO if a item for sale on ebay that is discussed here is against policy then any mention of ANY MANUFACTURER should follow the same guidelines. It may inspire someone to make a informed (not saying an accurrately informed) decision.

I for one do not mind these threads as it helps make me aware of possible pitfalls should I ever start buying items from ebay OR from anyone for that matter.

[edit]

I understand that it is against forum policy to promote items that bring personal gain, but even if the OP's intent was to inspire someone to bid or even veiw it IF the OP does not profit from doing so, what is the issue?

I have never understood why people read threads that they know don't interest them, and understand even less why they take the time to post in them. It seems very odd to me.

I did a quick unscientific survey of the first 5 pages of threads in this particular forum of the board, roughly 100 threads, and only 3 were about eBay. Even if I missed a one or two, that's only 4 or 5% of the most recent threads. And if we extrapolate that out, one eBay thread per page, and there's 1,659 pages in this forum, with a total thread count of 41,466, we end up with only 4% of threads here.

Hardly an unavoidable topic of discussion, especially since most of the eBay threads have descriptive titles.

Simple answer......some people NEED something to grouse about. Prices, lack of this, too much of that, other peoples work\lack of skill\too much skill\non prototypical this and that and a whole jumble of other stuff. Best just to ignore them.

I think it's great the seller is trying to unload that pass. car. Looks like it came from a house fire or junior has been in the matches again!....remember the grilled cheez that looked like Jesus or the pope or something that sold?  Probably someone out there will buy a scorched pass. car.

Actually, he did criticize the subject of the OP.  And I have to agree with him.

There are too many laugh-at-the-Ebay-seller threads.  They do nothing to promote the hobby and only inspire others to laugh or mock people in the MR community.

What if the seller is a member of this forum?  How is that any different from mocking him directly here?  If this is ok with you, then we are opening up a WHOLE can of worms.

David B

The post that I replied to was his second, his RANT about how that type of post should not be on these forums.

Several people WERE inspired, infact, a few were interested in bidding.

We ARE the MR community, and the MOCKING was directed at an Ebay seller, whom has a zero feedback, has been a member for 2 years with NO sales, and from the look of the OTHER items they are selling, is NOT a MR'r.

Whether or not the seller is a member here or not is irrelavant, SHE did not post the thread. I didn't see anyone MOCK the seller anyway, only the Auction.

At Arjay's request, discussion over, on my end.

David,

We'll have to agree to disagree.  I find that the message boards with no humorous content at all on them to be, quite frankly, boring.  That's not to say that I don't enjoy the modeling content as well, or enjoy contributing to it.  My modeling might not be up to your standards, but that's okay.

And if you'll notice, not once did I say anything about the ebay seller, only the ITEM.   I actually think that sellers who are trying to thin out their collections (whatever I might personally think about the particular item) are quite smart.  It's a lot easier to get rid of unneeded items that way than it is to lug them to a train show these days (and there's usually more profit in it too, once you figure in hotel rooms, gas, food, and table costs).

So, on that note, I respectfully request an end to this discussion, before it does get out of hand.

Kettle.....Pot......

Doesnt his voice count as well?  If you are going to start a thread, then you have to be willing to recieve both sides of the coin....not only the positive ones.

David B

You make a valid point, His voice DOES count, as much as anyone elses. I had no intention of implying that it does not, and if it was taken differently, I apologize.

I want to keep this short, as it is nice to see that humor has returned to this thread, and will hopefully spread throughout the forum.

Don Z.

Then you really don't understand the core purpose(s) of the General Discussion forum here.

1. Complaining about what Kalmbach prints in Model Railroader.

2. Whining about hobby prices.

3. Weekly rants about how the hobby is dying.

4. Weekly rants about how RTR is ruining the hobby (which is dying as we speak).

5. Semi-monthly dirges about how craftsmanship has disappeared from the hobby.

6. Pointing and laughing at eBay sellers and their foibles.

7. Drowning in 50's nostalgia (i.e. the "Golden Age" when men were men and crude zamac castings were state of the art).

Essentially, this forum is a cyber version of the Monty Python "Argument Clinic".

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.

yeeaaaahhh. Actually I have seen those nasty trainwreck shows and seen that car. It took the engine to explode in doing it, but if they plowed into a tank train, a tanker semi, etc. It is a decent train wreck piece. And if one can;t find matching cars, you can always wrangle up some heavyduty flats or 86' semi haulers for a breakdown train on the return from the site

So...since the Title: "Yet another wonderful auction site find..." was not a clue to you that THIS thread was not of interest to youWhistling [:-^], and you chose to read it anyway, the rest of us, who find this kind of thread somewhat interesting, (for whatever reason), have to wade through your whiney replyWhistling [:-^] that has nothing to do with the topic or subject of the thread??? Is that any more or less fair to someone else?

It is clearly obvious from the title, and your comments, that this thread would be of no interest to you. So, Why click on the link to this thread and read it?, and then take the time for 2 replies? If you're not interested, simply skip the thread.Smile [:)]Yeah!! [yeah]

If I need information, I search for it in the archives, and if I don't find it, I post a thread asking for help. If I see a post that I think I can offer help to, I reply. If I see something interesting, I read it. I do not feel the need to reply to every post I read, but sometimes I chose to.
