turbine history:
the first UP turbine were steam turbines UP 1 and 2, used for a short while in 1939 but returned to GE to be used by Great Northern Service in 1943 than returned to GE and scrapped in 1944.
from 1949 - 1951 UP ( and late 1951 SP) tested a GE demo turbine UP 50
the picture of the resin model in the other turbine topic is a standard turbine, UP51 - 60, build 1952-1953, used from 1952 - 1964
Than came the veranda turbines: they used GP9B's as extra on all but 6 the veranda turbines #61 - 75 build in 1954, they ran from 1954 - 1964
The big or the super turbines, Lead engine, B unit and tender, 8500 - 10000 HP, UP1 - 30 were built between 1958-1961 and ran from 1958 - 1970
As an experiment in super kit-bashing late 1959 they started building a coal turbine, UP80 (later renumbered 8080) even bigger than the Super turbines, after static tests in 1962 it ran short periods in 1963 and 1964.
this giant consisted of a control unit rebuilt from an ALCO PA-1, a coal-burning turbine unit made from Great Northern straight electric locomotive 5018 and a coal supply tender from ar etired 4-6-6-4.

In my opinion, they should make a newer version with no walkways on the sides.

You are referring to the older version, without the verandas. The 8500hp (later 10000hp) versions also had Verandas.

For an HO model of an earlier one, see: http://www.resintrains.com/

The Resin Trains one seems rather huck.

www.walthers.com has them listed at only $499.99. I know that's still out of the pricerange for most of us, but that is less than $700-900.
huh?

Lupo, I saw pre-production photos on Lionel's web site a while ago. I don't know if they are still there.

Neither of those manufactures I feel would make a turbine as good as Broadway Limited. And its is very doubtful P2K would even attempt it. If they do make one it should be capable of pulling 200 cars.

then its not a veranda turbine anymore, I think it becomes a "BIG BLOW" the 8500HP version, an 3 unit monster: A unit, B unit and fuel
or one of the older double ended turbines but I think they are not that attractive,
For myself I don't like engines with two front sides
True it wouldn't be a Veranda anymore, but it would look a whole lot better. P2K or Athearn Genesis should make a good looking A unit with a B unit and a big oild tender.

Hello aggro,
did you see those photos on any website?
and wait for a review in an upcoming issue of Model Railroader
how accurate do you think reviews in Model Railroader are? are they in any way influenced by commercial backgrounds? (you don't write a negative review on one of your best advertiser)
Could I make a topic out of this?

I have not seen any Lionel Ho locomotives overhere in Holland, so I can't judge the quality, I only know so IF I want to order one I must do that "IN THE BLIND"
kind of a risk, concidering the amount of $$$ involved

I saw some photos of the unpainted Veranda. Look pretty good. Many free standing grab irons and handrails. And the body detail seems a good as plastic, even though it is die-cast. Money is the only thing stopping me from getting it here.

An awesome locomotive at an equally awesome price. Lionel is filling a niche market, however, because no one else produces this model except in brass, which would cost much, much more than Lionel's mass produced one, and would not have a DCC decoder and sound system. A big factor in Lionel's pricing is the QSI sound system / DCC decoder. I'm sure Lionel, Broadway Limited, and other manufacturers that use QSI systems get them at a significant volume discount, but if I were to purchase one as an individual they cost around $200 each. Broadway Limited's models are more reasonably priced only because they use plastic instead of cast metal. I think the newer Athearn Genesis locomotives are going to use QSI systems, too, and that's why they are becoming so expensive.

Whats really funny you could probably pick up a "O" scale MTH one for probably less than what Lionel will want for it.

What we really need is a three-unit gas turbine.

around $700,= that is a bundle, I saw the ad too but is it Photoshopped up?
It is scheduled for 'spring" but want to SEE one before I buy one, It also die-cast, will it look like the trix stuff?? Or is the detailing a bit like P2K , Genesis or Rivarossi: lots of questions to be answered
