So, where is your layout located? In a seperate building? In your basement? Do you model in a small bed room? In the attic? (I know this has been done before, but this gives an opportunity for the board newbies to respond.)

Mine is in my bed room at my parents house. 4' 6 " x 10' solid rectangle. If our house had a basement or functional attic, I would lay claim to it. [banghead]

My N scale layout is in the basement family room.

I made three 3' X 7" modules that bolt together to form a 10' X 14' "L".

The two end modules have an additional 1' bumpout on their sides near the end to allow broader loops.

mine is in my bedroom. It's N scale, and is 4'x4'. My former HO layout, wich I was forced to dismantle[:(][:(] because of a move to a small apartment, was 4'x8'.

I built a very large house, so that I could have a very large basement, so that I could have a very large layout. And now I have all of the above.

Mine is in the basement 11'3" x 18'8". This is turning out to be a good size for now. Smaller and I couldn't run the trains I want to; larger and I would never get anything done.
Enjoy

I secured trackage rights before the amalgamation back in 89' so as it stands 1/2 the basement belongs strickly to the MESS, above ground anyway. Everything below the track either is christmas or camping gear.

Dedicated railroad room in the basement. It's 13 1/2 by 15 1/2, with stub ended staging yards outside the railroad room at either end of the run. It's a good size for me. Big enough to keep me busy ans small enough so I might actually get it " Close to finished" one day.
Have Fun,

Mine is in my head - Haven't built it yet.

My last layout was in my garage - 12' x 14'

I got bored with MR for a while and I was tired of not being able to park my car in the garage so I tore it down.

The next layout with be a bit smaller - 4' x 8'

Mine's still in the planning stages; but if all goes well, it'll be an N scale in about a 3'x4' space. Small, I know, but that's what you get for living in an apartment. [;)]

We have a 22'6" x 18'6" den that houses our layout. It is 17' x 5' 6" HO. Still leaves room for the pinball machines , loveseat and tv stuff.

Same here, in the Garage, and under a storage loft.

All my trains are in the basement. They take up most of it except for the washing machine, etc.

Its gonna be in my living room after I put in a new wooden floor,
for now it is just colecting all kinds off RR modeling goodies, browsing the fora and armchair-modelling.
I just love your American basement lay-outs but having one where I live is allmost impossible,
I live in a dutch "polder" about 10-15 feet below sea-level: if i put a spade in the ground I immediately strike water!
I could model the French-Enghlish channel tunnel as someone suggested, but there wouldn't much to see: tossing trains into a tube to let them come out a bit further..
we have something like that, we call that plumming.

My layout was in a small, spare bedroom. Key word: was. Over the weekend, I got a flash: why not move the bedroom furnishings from the master bedroom (which is much larger) and into the room presently used for trains? Nearly as soon as the idea hit me (boing!), I began dismantling everything in each room. The swap now complete, I can began anew. Can't wait for that first lengthy passenger consist to take it's inagural trek across the new track plan![:D][:D][:D]

lupo,
I have a similar situation, not a lot of basements in Florida. With all the flooding from hurricanes, basements would become indoor swimming pools. Dave

Mine takes up 1/2 of the basement family room, about 10 x 13 with a continuous loop and branch. Keeps me busy for now.

It will be located in an upstairs office. Unfortunately, my mom said I can't use the whole thing. But the half of the room I am using has a built in counter top/desk around the walls, and will serve as the benchwork. The area is about 8.5' x 8.5'.

4th bedroom. thats not saying much though, 4 bedrooms. mine and my parents are about the normal size and the other 2 are not even close to being bedrooms. the one where my trains are is like 10 x 12 feet but is full of stuff along the walls with my trains hopefully in the middle. thats how i'm guessing it will be. and the other room is the same which is my old room now just the plant room and will probably be my dads guitar room.

until i move out for college i know this is where my layout will be. if i do buy an apartment or something in college i may move everything up there, or i could just leave it at my parents until i find some permanent.

my "workbench" is my desk in my room. has my tool box and some paint and what not. also doubles as my MRR storage stuff. i have all my ads and my big Walthers HO book in one thing, all the reference books in another, and all my Trains and MRR magazines in the other.

My house has 1 normal sized bedroom, 2 small bedrooms. One is mine, and one belongs to my little brother who is your age.
