Furthermore, manyaarticles on the HOW TO series in the magazine web page are
PDFs so they are doing it already.
Just complete the series and you have the way to put in CD.

Acpardo - Do you know anything about publication copyrights, particularly with regard to cross media reproduction? If you don't, then you don't begin to understand the possible problems involved. And the rules and regs in Germany don't necessarily apply here.

Yes, Nat'l Geographic is an excellent example of this. It can be done. And with production being computerized it will become even more cost effective in the future. This was done by Broderbund producing and issuing the sets and paying a royalty to NG. One of you entrepreneurs out there want to take on scanning and preparing them? I look around and see a pretty high level of integrity among most model rails so I expect piracy to be pretty low. I'd sure go for this.

And, BTW, I have about 75% of the MR's to the mid 40's. They take up about 12 feet of bookshelf.

National Geographic Magazine did that, all the way back to their very first issue in 1888. Volume 1 contains years 1888 through 1909, and the successive 9 volumes cover 10 year increments up through 1996. Their set was released in 1997. Each disk is both Windows and Mac compatible. I don't remember what the set cost, but even with a heavy cardboard box and individually packed CDs with documentation and a printed, fold-out world map, the set requires only 9 inches of shelf space. Each CD is searchable, and articles can be printed out if desired. Storing equivalent printed editions would probably take up 50 feet of shelf space.

I would definitely buy it. Had to get rid (sell) all my MR issues 1961-1980 because of lack of storing space. CD's would solve this problem and the same goes for Trains

As I said before MIBA that is a great German magazine is doing that.
So if we use you point of view they are loosing money, but they are so stuborn that keep doing that.
Today everyone in having a PC and sooner o later somebody will need it transfer to digital format.
What will be the reason to not face the future and ease of use digital archieves.

This exact same question/suggestion was posed on a number of occasions on MR's old forum and each time a Kalmbach rep would conclude it with a post indicating that they had already considered the idea and rejected it. If one stops to consider the question fully, there are a great many more problems to overcome in such a project than just transferring the pages of MR to a CD disk. I have to agree with MR's outlook that it probably wouldn't be financially profitable to take on such a project today.

That would be a great idea. It would be a great companion to the online magazine index.
Here's hoping!

This topic has been discussed before. It would be great if MR, Trains, etc. were available on CD-ROM, but I doubt that it would happen.

I doubt MR will produce back issues via CD ROM. As things are Model Railroader has a profitable sideline in duplicating individual back issue articles to order. That is unlikely to change anytime soon.

I would be a buyer of such a CD were it issued.

I would like to have a lot of the model RR magazines on CD, but Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman in particular. I have both magazines from mid 1963 on , but some of the issues are getting a little ragged. I would like have all the issues back to the beginning.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Excellent idea! I would definetly buy it.

Apparently Mr. Sperandeo reads these threads. Hopefully he'll see this one and either respond or pass it on to his fellow MRR staff in which later they could feature this idea and run a poll in a future MRR magazine as well as on the forum.

"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"

Model Railroader on CD
Posted by acpardo on Friday, January 30, 2004 1:11 PM
Bergie..why you do make a poll to see how many people could be intrested on having Model railroader on CD. We are talking about older issues. Like year 1990 to 2000. Miba in Gemany does that.
I think that could help a lot of people to save space and have the complete colection of the magazine and also could be a good stuff to use in The Wold Greatest Hobby campaign.
Any opinion???
