It is a dual function than can open and close much like the prototype, but the dummy coupler is very small and probably could not be used for HO operation. Cheers

yep, me too. I just couldn't remember when I first read your question, had to get back to the train room. Sure enough it's in the plastic bag. the standard coupler doesn't bother me all that much but who knows. maybe one day i'll want to swing it shut though.
Note to the original poster...sorry for this aside...I hope your question is answered.
Yes, daily between Victoria and Courtenay, where I live. Those poor drivers have a number of crossing accidents every year, none of which seem to do any considerable damage to the RDC. A lady crossing against the signal (no gate) got her mini-van badly damaged just 10 days ago. She claimed she couldn't see the signal for the glare.
I rode the Dayliner once, with wife happy to accompany me, 17 months ago. It is a very scenic route in parts, and then gets a bit more swallowed up in the trees as it travels closer to Parksville and north to Courtenay.
It is relativley inexpensive, too. If you book two or more weeks in advance you get a significant reduction in your fare. I think we paid CDN$28 one way to Victoria in '06. Not bad for a 4 hour train ride on a real RDC.

I just happened to have some of those engines since the N&W is one of the railroads I watched while they were still 100% steam.
We have visited Victoria several times in the past years and really enjoyed the Gardens other attractions around the Island. Do they still run the RDC cars on the Island??
