Hi Michael,

The 4965 Marx train set you found was made in 1971. The set contains a number 490 plastic steam locomotive with light, chugger and reverse, a black PC tender, a 467110 B&O Boxcar, a 21913 green LV Hopper, and an orange PC caboose. The set included a 390, 25 watt transformer and 10 pieces of 027 track.

Marx began making these "four-wheel plastic car sets in 1952. In general, sets with four-wheel plastic cars were among the lowest priced sets Marx produced.

Most "O" gauge toy trains, if stored in dry areas, will run even without lubrication after being stored for decades. Most will run smoother when they are lubricated though.

The 027 gauge track in the set you found is compatable with the 027 track currently being produced by Lionel and K-Line.

As far as set value goes, per Greenberg's Guide to Marx Trains, Volume 3, Sets (Copyright 1991) the whole set (with set box) is worth $45 in excellent condition and $25 in good condition.

If you need any more specific imformation let us know.

Regards,

Tim Pignatari

Suggest this question would get a quicker answer in the "Collectible Toy Trains" forum than this one, as that is what you have, not a model railroad item.

What Did I Find ?

I am clueless on what I found in an attic when recently helping someone move. Love trains, but not involved with them at current.

Boxed has No. 4965 Electric Train Set by Louis Marx & Co. Locomotive, tender, 2 freight cars and caboose. No items like trees, bridges, or anything else - on trains, transformer, and track.

Looks like 1969 printed on back of box by the box manufacturer.

I cleaned off the track, put a bit of oil on gears, and the darn thing runs great ! It's been in the attic over 25 years.

Is it a common set ? Is it uncommon that this thing worked fine after so long in storage ? Can some help tell me what it is, some lingo that tarin folks will recognize. I might like to buy more track for it, and set-up a model with all the trees and stuff.
