Have any of you folks built and put the optional motor/gearbox Walther's sells on it to make it a real operating "walking beam" pumpjack? Is it as cool as it would seem to be? They sell a completely assembled pump, motor, and gearbox for O-Scale and they look pretty impressive. I'm hoping the smaller size does too.

Well...my pump model Walther's part no. 933-3170 actually contains 3 spur gears and specifically states that part no. 933-1050 Motorizing Kit will then attach with one screw and make it "pump". Apparently the motor/gearbox is 1:360 reduction. Both above part numbers can be seen on Walther's site www.walthers.com. I know the bigger scale version looks fantastic pumping away. Supply is 6 - 12 VDC...6 VDC is very close to scale rotation speed. Since it is DC you can reverse the direction of the counterweights but I think CCW is correct when viewed from the left of the pumpjack.
I'm just curious how smooth the HO scale version operates...

Actually it does not matter which way a pumpjack rotates, it still pumps oil either way. the speed at which they move varies greatly due to pressure in the casing and viscosity of the oil. The ones I work with are also dirty and covered in more oil than a big mac. They usually have a small shack at the rear end which houses the one cylinder engine that drives them by a 4 inch wide belt. My info is based only on the ones I have worked on. They vary from each one and they vary from each oil company, so i may not be correct if asked by another oil company field technician.
