A little humour.....are you superstitious?

Last week,I was undecided wether I'd purchase another loco or other railroad goodies.Well,my problem is that I love owning locos or collecting them may be a better term.However to my lady's opinion,I already had more than needed(12) considering I don't have a fully operating layout yet.

She has a point....but I'm addicted so I went for another loco....wich brought another "problem".The new loco would have been my thirteenth,the "not so lucky" number.What if it was plagued with constant derailing or stalling,or what else?Was having 13 locos going to mean havoc to the entire layout?No way to know I guess......

So I chose to own fourteen instead.........Honestly,I don't believe in superstitions at all but I wasn't to take that kind of a risk...or was I supposed to?That's what I told my lady...and she shook her head and...smiled.

I'm a little superstitious. If I go to buy a peticular loco and decide to buy a different one then the one I bought always seems to have problems. So when I go to a hobby shop or show I either buy what I have in mind or I go with nothing in mind. Crazy? My wife thinks so but it is consistant so that is my superstition.

I'm not superstitious, but one of the guys in my local N-scale club says, "If you're rich, you obviously don't have enough locomotives. You can't have too many locomotives, even if you don't run all of them."

At least she smiled, mine left, though it wasn't over the trains. The trains were with me before she was, and they are still with me now. Women come and go, but trains are forever. [:)]

Actually, the way you do it is when you get to 12, you buy a dummy,call it 12 1/2 and just keep going. [:P]

Nah--not superstitious. If there are 13 locos or passenger cars I wanted while visiting the hobby shop I'd buy all of 'em (assuming the credit card isn't close to the limit). Hard to be superstitious when you're born on the thirteenth of the month and life's been good overall.[^]

I am insanely superstitious

Because of that. Every one of my locos and rolling stock matches all Kadee and NMRA RP 25 standards

I use a 12 gauge main bus with feeders every 3-4 feet

My Benchwork is built to take a meteorite impact.

My future basement will be the first story of a yet to be determine multi-story doomsday shelter.

I will have two doomsday shelters so that should the A-bomb Fall or the Death asteroid fall I can dive for cover now. Yet if Yellowstone decides to blow I have time to throw everything in the back of several U-Hauls and hot foot it to main where there are similar underground facilities set up.

I have started a project code named "Project Dooms Day" saving and documenting as much of everything as I can so should "Dooms Day" happen. This material is available to be redistributed to those that have survived.

I Refuse to fly on any airplane I do not own. And I detest driving. SO my chosen mode of conveyance is Train. And Since I cant get scheduled service to me, I will have to buy my own. Which might make the Yellowstone scenario. What I can throw in to a string of baggage cars.

Oh. And I counteract and make sure that only direct human intervention can be the reason for any malfunction on my layout because Me and Mr. Murphy have a long history together and as such I need to be ready for his havoc at all times.

So am I superstitious. Yes. A little over paranoid. Maybe. Insane. Debatable

PS I am also being buried with supplies to build a Full 10X12 model train layout. I hate to think that when I get to heaven, the only people who have opulent and elegant things are the Ancient Egyptians because they came prepared.

Really you can tell by the referances to broken mirrors, black cats, friday the thirteenth etc.[}:)][}:)] Com'n guys, you're scaring the poor guy. Here's the straight skinny. There's nothing wrong with buying that thirteenth locomotive as long as it's not a GP-13 or and SD-13. For some reason, they don't run well unless you buy them on friday the thirteenth. Not exactly superstitious, but the I numbered my first locomotive (Spectrumm Consolidation) 2307 after my two favorite athlete's numbers...Retired Cubs Secondbasemen Ryne Sandberg #23 and retired Broncos QB Great John Elway #7. Call it "for good luck".

Let's get practical:

• break a mirror - leaves dangerous glass for someone to step on


• under a ladder - do you like things falling on your head


• black cats - fade into shadows too easily, step on them, fall down, get bit, etc.


• number 13 - it's perhaps biblical, like the number 6, being less than 7, which is perfection, so less than perfection. perhaps 13 is considered bad since it tries to be more than 12, which is another common 'good' number in the bible?

Actually the reason the number 13 is considered to be bad luck is a Biblical reference. It comes from the fact that the 13th guest (Jesus) at the final supper was killed.

Ladders are the same. If you look at the shape a ladder makes it forms a triangle which has been equated to the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

For the Black cats it comes from the fact that Witches have been historicaly protrayed with having a black cat as a familiar. It used to be believed that if a black cat crossed your path you were to be marked as a victim of a witch.

Breaking a mirror is one that I am not sure of the exact origin. It might have something to do with the fact that it was once believed that a mirror reflected the truth to the observer.

I know that Railroaders also have thier own superstitions. Illinos Centeral Engineers used to believe that one of thier 4-6-0s was cursed. I cant recall the initial number or what it was later remunbered to, but the locomotive was the one that John Luther "Casey" Jones met his fate on. After his death IC rebuilt the loco and it had its fair string of bad luck and accidents.

I do not know if what I have posted (other then the fact about Casey Jones's locomotive) is positively accurate it is just some information I have found when I was doing research on superstitions for a Psychology class I took..
