I bought an Athearn Ready-to-Roll AMD-103 (Amtrak 163 to be exact), and at the beginning I was wondering if the engine was really an SDP40F because it kept derailing. After awhile, the engine quit derailing. The best engine I bought has to be my Norfolk Southern SD60M from Proto 2000.

I've not tried the Genesis Fs. Have a couple of the earlier "Blue Box" examples fitted with Walthers detailing kit though and these are superb - great haulage ability, mainly due to massive ballast weight.

I personally don't like Athearn Genisis. They are a pain to put together and I don't like they way they run. I've never tried they F units but after buying two Gensis locos I've decided it best not to buy no more. I'll save the money for Katos.

Thanks,
Jeremy

I would gamble that Walthers would adjust pricing only if Athearn's purchase by Horizon Hobbies wrought immediate price increases--which would be a shame.

OK, engine looks good but it's really pricey....any comments on the quality of the detail and the quality of how these engines will run??/ bottom line, is it worth the price...???.....(Keep in mind you can buy the entire engine and passenger car sets for 40% off via mail order.

If I purchase nothing else this year...I want this set. Athearn locomotives have a proven track record for being good buys, so I don't think the price is out of line. If you don't want the cars, just wait for the A-B-B-A diesel lashup to arrive in September '04. [bow] All hail the CHIEF!!!
