Do you receive your MR before it hits your LHS?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 1:14 PM
reason I ask.... my sub expired and I was thinking of renewing it, but I could have sworn I read on this blog that people were having problems with delivery.

They were receiving their mags after the stores received theirs, which seems weird to me. It's been my experience that when you get a magazine sub, A) you're suppossed to get it cheaper, and B) it's suppossed to arrive before it's available in the stores. Did MR get this prob corrected? Just curious.

Thanks.

This month the nearest hobby shop didn't have it. I just got it today, it's a great issue! It usually comes about 4 days before the hobby shop gets it in.

In the Chicago area we are just pleased when we get our mail. Much of it winds up being burned or trashed if the guy delivering it wants to take it easy that day.

I've gotten every issue for the last 9 years. All from the LHS, Yes it would be cheaper to subsribe but then I wouldn't have a legitimate excuse to go to the LHS, would I![}:)]

I allowed my subscription to expire...but in the past I seemed to always get my copy before the hobby shop did.

Don't know. I don't get to my LHS very often. My copy gets to me way before the guy in Australia that said his copy got to him about 1-1/2 months after pub.

I've always subscribed to MR for a year, then I renew. I was wondering if any of you ever take the two or three year subscription options?

I get MR and Trains and they both religiously arrive about the first of the month.Only once in the past 10 years has either failed to arrive. One issue of Trains didn't make it,while my MR did. I believe that someone wanted my magazine in the Post Office and was too ignorant to pass it on. Otherwise I am satisfied with my subscription and will continue it as long as MR, Trains , & I are around.

In holland I get my copy a few weeks before the month starts, so I am expecting the februari number somtime end next week, and that is way before my LHS because there is no LHS selling trains, just kites and RC

My MR arrives on or before the 5th of each month. Sometimes the LHS gets it a day before, but not often. I like the convenience of receiving my MR every month. I have done the 3 year subscription on occasion, but only so I do not need to keep checking the expiration date and/or running the risk of missing a copy. Over the years, MR has published articles that have covered every aspect of the hobby. My archive of old MR's is a great data source.

What you remember was some disgruntled posts by several subscribers, of which I was one, who had problems after MR changed their publication and mailing process about 18 months ago. Many subscribers, myself included, were getting their mag's on the 15th of the month or later, well after they hit the news stands. This problem persisted for about 6 months. Then, responding to all of the noise some of us were making, MR changed the proceedure with the publication house and the problem was FIXED!!!! Thanks you very much. Ever since (for about a year) I receive my MR and Trains on the 1st or 2nd, sometimes even a day before. The only exception was this month with the holidays and the weekend following it was the 5th, but no complaints there.

I am quite please with the way MR responded to and fixed this problem. I don't think you will have any problems if you renew your subscription.

I have no idea when the two LHS here get it in, but I receive it promptly the first two days of the month. It came late this month, but that may have been my fault in not promtply renewing.

I've always received mine on the 1st or 2nd of the month. The only problem i've had was when the post man delivered my magazine and a neighbors to my house by mistake. The two magazines had stuck together. Otherwise I've had 20 years of no problems.

Absolutely no problems with mail delivery. Not sure about hobby shop, very very rarely go there.

I always get my copy before it hits the newstands (around the 12th of the month), and believe me, it's a lot cheaper to subscribe. On very rare occasions (2-3 times in the 15-odd years I've been a subscriber) a copy has gone missing. Each time, I have emailed the Customer Service people and they attend to it right away. Within a week or two I got my replacement copy. I think they do a great job.

By the way, I live in Melbourne, Australia.

I use the local hobby shop as an excuse to get the MR, (And a few other things)

When I gotta have it right away, Walmart's mag rack sometimes is first with the issue for the month.

I suppose I could subscribe, however my mailbox is full enough as it is without adding anymore invoices. Cash works for me.

My subscription copy nearly always arrives during the first week of the month. We have no local hobby shop here, but do have book and magazine dealers. They receive their copies about 2 weeks after I get mine.

It struck me that you subscribers in the US receive your copies of MR and Trains
much later than we do in Holland. I have been receiving mine for at least two years now
about the middle of the preceding month so my copies of February MR and Trains have already been read and filed. I have been subscribing since 1961 and the first 40 years 9it was each month a gamble whether and when they would arrive; sometimes they did during the month, some times 1-2 months later and a few times not al all. But as I said now it is perfect and I hope they don't change their European distributor.

I usually get mine from the nearest Newsagents - I usually get this month's magazine just as next month's is being advertised on the website! On the other hand, I'm amazed they stock it at all - is a small town. Must be more model train enthusiasts around here than I thought...

I usually receive mine about the first week of the mounth before. i was pleasently surprised to receive the February issue soon after the January issue. I do not have an LHS so the subscription route works well for me and it is cheaper.

I'm a subscriber to MR and Classic Trains and the delivery time varies from month to month. Sometimes I get them up to 4-6 days before the LHS and other times they come about the same day or a few days later.

My biggest problem is that since they don't come wrapped (for my protection) a lot of times the covers are ripped, torn or folded. I would prefer them in the plastic bags. Sure wish all those damned drop-out adds would fall out before I took delivery!

In answer to one poster, I usually renew for 2 or 3 years.

Roger
