Northlandz biggest pike in world, but...

a bit on whimsical side, perhaps:

OTOH, the layout featured in Feb04 MR is better detailed and is still 6000 sq ft:

I think that Northlandz is a nice setup, but they have no realistic operating rules, they just run the trains until their dead (Guilford style).

You already got the Feb. issue? I have a subscription and it hasn't come yet.

I got the Feburary issue today. Man, that sure is a big layout! The other layout featured is a freelanced layout featuring the Western Maryland, N&W, and B&O. It's a steam era layout so he's got a lot of steamers. It's really cool!

Northlandz is definitely cool, but there`s nothing particularly exciting about their trains.

The soccer stadium is fantastic, but way to big for my layout. Maybe I can fit in a field someplace.

I feel your pain! My parents habitually renew my MR subscription as a Christmas gift each year, a practice which dates back to my poor high school student days, and due to their failure to deal with the issue, the magazines still get delivered to their address, not mine. That means it can take quite some time for me to get my new issue(s); in fact, I just received the November 2002 issue about a month ago, as it was lost in transit when it was given to my sister when she visited! It is a terribly inefficient method of getting my railroad "fix", but I think my parents like it because it keeps me coming back to visit!

Northlandz is the creation of a guy with loads of imagination and vision. Frankly, I think his enthusiasm is awesome and inspiring. True, I wouldn't want to deal with the headaches of trying to maintain something so vast, but gee whiz, what a blast to look at! I can't imagine anyone whom enjoys model railroading having an issue with Northlandz. Think of all the kids that will be taken to see it and the impression it will leave on them--as well as quite a few adults! I've only seen it featured in the pages of MR and I was smiling for days. More power to the visionary![:D]

I visited Northlandz a few years ago along with some model railroad/railfan friends and was very impressed. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. If you ever get the chance to visit Northlandz in person, do not miss it.

Both, I think--in some cases the scenery is the path.

The way I see it, Northlandz is the world's biggest train-set vs. the world's biggest model railroad. It's quite an achievement anyhow, I figure the effect is somewhat like the old department-store window trainset multiplied by several orders of magnitude.

I have an issue of the last MR with a Northlandz article so I probably won't pick up this month's unless there's something else in there that interests me...

I agree that Northlands is the worlds biggest train set. It looks nice and all. But have the feeling that all the trains do is continuously run in loops.

As for the largest model railroad, Im working on that. Its going to take me a while to get there. But I envision a model railroad that will take up nerly 50 acres, be a selectivly compressed version of the western US railroad network. (Im starting in wyoming and working out) and the resulting atraction built to accomodate it will be nearly 5 stories tall.Again. This is way off in the future, and its going to take awhile for my little 6 X18 layout to get there.

(Yes thats right. Im startling just like John Allen. Starting with something small. and building it into a grand model empire)

James.
