Hi Rick,
I just posted a few "tutorial photos" on my website. You gave me a good excuse to finally get to it. It's not complete but it should help you. Scroll down a little on the page.
I use old bailing twine died some shade of green and adjust shades later with paint. I also paint the floral wire brown or gray before starting the trees.

Hi,
This is what I do. I take the flower arranging wire which was purchased from Micheals and cut it about 2 feet long. Fold it in half and loop the one end over my screw that was put in a 2*4 that is about 18 inches long. ON the other end of the wire I make a hook which hooks into the hook that is in the chuck form the drill. This is used to then turn the wire.
The rope is then cut into about two inch pieces. These pieces are then seperated into seperate strands that make up the rope. These strands are then placed between the two wires while one end is attached to the chuck and the other is attached to the screw in the 2*4. When all the strands are placed in the wire take the drill and pull so that the wires are tight and squeeze the trigger. From personnel experience it seems that the more you let the drill turn the better the tree.
Next cut the strands into the shape you like, then spray the shape with hair spray and apply the Turf Material from Woodland Scenics and again spray with hair spray to hold it all in place.
Hope this helps, if not send an email and I will reply.
