I found another old A&P photo and it does not show a gold circle around the logo:

This is what is posted on the Bar Mills website when you click on the Billboards link:

IT'S BEEN GREAT FUN... BUT IT'S TIME.

ALL BILLBOARDS HAVE BEEN DIS-CONTINUED, THE COMPLEXITY OF CURRENT PROJECTS HAVE DICTATED THAT WE CALL IT A DAY ON OUR FAMOUS "BAR MILLS" BILLBOARD... THE CONCEPT THAT STARTED IT ALL.

Speaking of Bar Mills...they announced last Spring that they will no longer be making their great looking signs. I'd advise you to get some while you can. Joe

I built one of those signs some years ago.

The A&P Sign was white on red.

The picture was not the best. The stucture is 2 feet long and the sign was about roughly 6 inches long (Actually the O scale Bar Mills sign.)

I have an A&P truck on my N scale layout.  It came from Classic Metal Works.  the A&P logo is gold on the red body of the truck.

Their website doesn't have the N scale item shown anymore, but there is a picture in their HO section.

Jerry, I'd go with a gold ring. That's a very clear memory to me from my childhood in the middle 50's. I remember them switching to the white ring when backlit plastic signs became common in the 60's. So, if your period is the 50's the gold ring was very common. I think they switched to white because gold doesn't illuminate in a plastic sign.

Thanks all, guess I'll go with the white letters with gold ring.  The inst. said white ring.  Probably something that evolved over time. The PRR used to use " gold" lettering until the paint became too expensive, they then switched to the imitation gold color...maybe same for A&P.

Here for what it is worth (mostly black and white but a few color shots) is a three page photo gallery of A&P food store photographs!

All in the context of a very thorough article about A&P

Episode 3 of "The War" on PBS had a quick color shot - white letters on red with gold ring on outside.

Here's a picture of the sign I think you're looking for, sometime in the 30's:

Unfortunately, it's in black and white. I remember the sign as white letters on a red background with the outline of the letters and the outside of the circle in gold.

This is the City Classics supermarket model on my layout.  It comes with a coupon which you can send in to get a decal sheet with a number of prototype logos for markets - Kroger and Piggly Wiggly are two that come to mind, along with the good old A&P.  This is the way I remember the A&P growing up:

This is the new logo. The older one was a circle with a contrasting ring with A&P in the center with completly different style lettering. In fact it was still known as the Atlantic & pacific Tea Co.  Probably in the 40s.  Thanks for your effort.....I tried every search I could think of.

I googled A & P supermarkets and came up with this link.  http://www.apsupermarket.com/

Looks like the letters should be white on a red background as they suggested.

Hope this helps.

For you old timers.... Starting to assemble my A & P billboard & the instructions say to paint the letters white on a red background. I seem to remember that the letters were yellow or gold. Could not find a color sign on the web, so Can anyone remember the color of the A & P letters & the circle edging?  Thanks....  Jerry
