Keep it "Simple" or Go Remote?

I got back into O gauge three years ago. I've built a platform that is now aprox. 13' by 15'. and with a tentative track layout using MTH real trax. I have a MTH Z4000 and a old Lionel ZW for power. What additional equipment etc is required to have my trains up and running?
I've taken my time so that I do this right , but have no idea as to the "best" way to run the trains. All my engins are MTH with proto sound two. I plan on having four engins running at a time? What is my next step?
Thanks Ken
