What's up with Proto E8/9's??

I see in the new Walthers sale ad that they've knocked 2/3's off the price on these. $200 DC AB units are now $69. $300 undecorated DCC w/sound now $109. Confused [%-)] Are these going to be discontinued? They have a few other P2K locos for 1/2 off. These seem like some pretty drastic price cuts. (or maybe they should have been charging these prices all along)

Does it say discontinued?  Walthers usually labels their products as to the status.  I do know that in latter years, Proto 2000 loco's went up drastically in price so this also may be an attempt to "normalize" the price back to similar other products too.  Not sure.

Proably just clearing out some wharehouse stock.  I'm guessing that the roadnames they have left are not the best selling.  Better to sell them cheap and make a little and clear out space.  With the advance of detailing and technology, the next run of E units will be even better than the last and since everything is limited runs now, there will be more E units.

I've got news for you. I've been buying my P2K E units from my LHS the past couple of years for under a hundred dollars per unit, around sixty to eighty dollars. Fact is, I was wondering why they were so high in the catalog.

Lat month they dropped them from $200 to $120. Now they dropped again to $70. Some as low as $43.

Jeff-That $69 is for an A/B unit.(DC) That B&O would look nice pulling some heavy weights on my layout.(he said looking into his empty walletSigh [sigh])

I bought one of those B&O units. It was quickly stripped and repainted for the KCS (black scheme).

Well I think it's a good deal. One SP daylight E9 #6050 is going to be discontinued when sold out, and its cheaper than what I payed for my E9 ON EBAY.

Walthers is getting of the older E8/9s before they release the new tooling for the motive power for the Milwakee Road Hiawatha.  That way people have to buy the new version.

Ah ha!  An evil plan by Walthers!

But seriously, what do the other road names matter for the Hiawatha?  It isn't like most of them are going to be pulling that rather "unique" looking passenger train.

Does that mean the regular SP units are better than #6050, the one being discontinued?

I agree on the Proto 2000 E units.  In fact when you consider the nose contour and the windshields, the post in between the windshields, the windshield gasket treatment, the E7's abd E's haven't held up well when compared to even Stewart F units and especially Genesis F units.  These diesels have the same front ends (E's vs F's) so they should look better than they do.  Being Rio Grande I haven't needed any E units, but I did purchase a CB&Q E8 to potentially model the hand off of the California Zephyr to the Rio Grande in Denver.  The printing on the nose was smeared and again, I didn't think the nose and windshields look the best so I returned it and to this day don't own any E units.  I do hope Walthers upgrades the tooling to make them comparable to Genesis and so on.

I already have two E8/9s with sound since before so I waited a while to decide. But now I ordered one more of those for 70$ I think the price is quite superb for what you get. I'm happy with my old ones and I'm quite sure I'll be pleased with these as well.

Will these run OK on 24" or bigger turns and #6 turnouts? My Dash 8 runs fine on these. I figure the locos are about the same size and wheel base.

Loather, I have an older one which does 22"s and #4s no sweat.

Hey, I have a few PROTO 2000 E8's & was wondering what is the best after market sound to install. Where do you buy PROTO 2000 E8's with sound for $109.

Cheers

My E6's and E7's handle 18" radius and #4 turnouts just fine. I fairly sure that the new E8's and 9's will also.

These were advertised in the Walthers Sept. sales ad. I guess from the responces they are the old tooling. But you can't beat the price!

Sometimes there is pricing that way.

They usually know where to put the pricing if they want to clear out the old stuff.

I have nine P2K E8/9s. Four have QSI sound, and I installed Soundtraxx in the other five. I much prefer Soundtraxx over the QSI sound. The QSI is quite loud, but is computer generated, and doesn't sound real. The Soundtraxx is actual recordings on a chip, but not quite as loud as the QSI.

There are volume controls that you can adjust the loudness to your taste.

And with the various computer based interfaces availible you may be able to put actual engine or other sounds on the chip yourself.
