Stupid question, but did you check the connections to the speaker?

Yes I did. It is definately the speaker. PCM is shipping me another speaker free of charge, but I don't like the fact that I already require a replacement so soon after purchase.

Smitty, I had the same problem in my PCM F3 A/B. Two of the 3 speakers suddenly become vibrating, after only 30 minutes of use. I pick uped they, and pressing the center they sound fine. I solicited 2 speakers to PCM, changed it and all O.K. They are inserted face down just over the tower of gears, maybe that is not a good design. Beware, in other engines, the speakers are very close to the rails, and the magnets pick up any metallic particle. Bye.

My loco had only about 5 hours or less of run time, and was on top of the front truck.

Well, it is the speaker. I went home at lunch and pulled the shell off. What is weird is that when I depressed the speaker membrane slightly with my finger it sounded clear again. The speaker is losing sound intermittently because of something internally wrong with it.

Another thing I noticed is that the speaker sits right above the gear tower on the rear trucks. Because of this there was a bit of oil on the membrane. I wonder if this had anything to do with it.

I guess I will be hitting PCM up for a replacement. Thanks for all the advice!!

I just contacted PCM, and they say it may be a bad speaker. I was told to first try a reset *CV8 to 8). If that doesn't work, he said to take the shell off, put a meter to the speaker to check impedance, and if that the speaker is toast, he said to let them know and they would send me a new one. Hopefully it is that easy. Great customer service so far!!!

That is about what it sounds like. I hope it isn't a blown speaker because this is a relatively new locomotive with little run time. The other thing that scares me is that the board seems to have disabled the sound. Are they that smart to detect a problem and turn themselves off?

It also has that "Made in China" stamp on it, so who knows....

The ABA set is configured like this: There is an A and B unit that is "lashed-up", meaning that the A unit controls both. Then there is a stand alone A unit which can run independantly. The stand alone A is what is hosed, but I still don't feel really comfortable messing with it. I think the amount that I spent on this set is why I am so apprehensive about opening it up. I have done decoder installations on Genesis and P2K units, but that was really a simple task.

It is looking more and more like I will be sending it to PCM. I wanted to avoid that, but I would rather do that than open it up myself and screw it up even more. PCM may not even touch it at that point. Thanks for all the input up to this point.

I did notice that PCM has their own forums now. I may try to give that a shot too.

FWIW, my earlier Loksound decoder, the v.3.0 in my Trix Mikado, also has a very slight hiss and crackly sound when it sits idle and otherwise soundless.  If I mute it with F1, that goes away.

Maybe this is something that Loksound should deal with?

I haven't opened it yet. I was trying to avoid that, but I may have to. I just hope that the speaker isn't fried. I would hate to think with the money that I spent that the speaker would be fried, especially since it has very little run time, and I kept it at low volume.

Unfortunately it isn't that easy (I wish it were). The set that I have is completely sold out. PCM doesn't have anymore. I was hoping somebody familiar with these things might have a clue on a relatively simple fix for this, or at least might know what the problem might be. If not, I will have to send it to PCM for them to take a look at.

Now the sound has completely shut itself off, but it is still running otherwise. What the heck?!?!?! I conveniently lost the users manual, so I don't have that reference.

LOK Sound/PCM PA Scratchy Audio
Posted by csmith9474 on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 10:30 PM
I have a PA/PB/PA set from PCM. Everything has been great up until now. The stand alone PA all of a sudden has a "scratching" sound coming from the speaker. It still runs fine, and all the other audio functions such as the horn and the whistle can still be heard. The track and wheels are clean, and the lashed up PA/PB sound just fine. I have a NCE Power Cab system. Any thoughts?? Could the speaker be blown? I have always had the audio at the lowest setting (F8). Thanks.
