Scratchbuilding NS C44-9W
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 11:04 AM
OK, since no one is going to produce DASH 9s (at least for the forseeable future), I thought I might try scratchbuilding one (or many if it works right). Anyone know where to start? Like plans, commercial kits to use as a base? Stuff like that?

Thanks!

Both Kato and Athearn make C44-9W Locos. Start with one of those undecorated to make your NS version.

Actually, Athearn still offers an NS version. Kato lists a couple different NS versions as well. Kato is a far superior unit, but costs a lot more too.

If you use Athearn or Kato make sure you get the high number board version which NS purchased their C40-9Ws with. I'm in the process of painting a undecorated Athearn in their new paint scheme.

Wow, I hadn't realized that they had stopped production. It makes me glad that I got a NS just in time. Now I guess I need to get on the CSX's.
