Ash Pits

I want to install a small ash pit on my layout

I did a fourm search but didn't find any pictures

Does anyone have a photo of one to share ?

Are you looking for model or prototype pictures?  Here's a Walthers one that I have on my layout:

It's a pretty nice kit.  And I added a light pole at one end so that it illuminates that area when I'm running "at night".

I actually had my mom scoop out a bag of ashes from her fire place so that I could use them in and around my ash pit.  She wrote on the outside of the Ziploc bag, "Mom's ashes".  I'm leaving it on there, just to see if I get any response from others.

Have you taken a look at Kalmbach's book on modeling locomotive servicing terminals?

It's a good reference and has a nice section on different ways to model ash pits.  Here's a link to it on Kalmbach web site, as well as Amazon.com

Many railways used the ash for ballast or fill.

I remember as a child, locos emptied their ashes over a steel bridge into our main river, winter and summer (who cares about water quality or fish) of course they were the biggest employer in town so who cared, but it also added ash to the river beside a stinking oil refinery that today still leaches barrels of oil into the water. The slime from the bottom of this river must glow at night, and there are beavers living in the river ( they may have 3 heads)

The Life Like coal tower kit, in place below, came (comes?) with a shallow black plastic tray meant to fit below the rails where you would have removed maybe seven or eight ties.  I didn't bother installing mine, but I may go back and do that under the lead to my turntable.

Tom, that is a nice setting you have there.  I hope to see the rail and "dirt" added to the yard.  I expect that it will look very nice.

Crandell reminded of something that I forgot to add.  The Walthers Ash pit/conveyor does come with an actual beveled pit that sits underneath the opposite track.  I, too, removed a few ties for realism.  Unfortunately, you can't really see it from the picture angle.

I saw this book while at my LHS yesterday

It's a great book . It did have a picture of 1 ash pit but it was much larger than

the one i'm doing
