Hi yougottawanta, You've probably decided already, I say buy it! My brother has one and it's the cat's meow, you can't get one around here for 400$ without a gun and a mask!!

It is all brand new and in the case or box. The Big Boy comes with a pretty nice wood stained case .

Thanks to all for the input. I called my LHS and told him to order my Big Boy and then inquired about how many trix box cars were left. There were 10 UPs. So I told him I would take all of them and pick them up tomorrow. Thanks everyone ! Smile [:)]

I think that Trix are the finest build locomotives on the market today.  I only have one myself the 2-8-2, but I have a friend who models UP and has every Big-Boy known to be made in HO scale.  The Trix is by far the best running one.  The LocSound part is what it is.  Theoretically you can reprogram the sound to suit your personal taste.  Rolling stock is good except I don't like the strange way they do the coupler mounts.

That sounds like a good price.  They are $600 at my hobby store.

Jerry,

I have the Trix 2-8-2 Mike and like it a lot.  It came with the older Loksound v.2.0 decoder in it.  (They're up to v.3.5 now.)  Here's a run down on the Trix Mike:

  • Thumbs Up [tup] Detailing is exquisite
  • Thumbs Up [tup] Operation: It really crawls well.  When you start out, there's a slight delay, you hear the brake release, then the locomotive pulls out.  Pretty cool!  Momentum was built in right out of the box.  If you stop the locomotive quickly (other than using the STOP button on your throttle), the locomotive gradually slows down and you can actually hear the brakes squeal just before it comes to a halt.  Another cool feature!
  • Thumbs Down [tdn] The horn is "fixed".  So if you hit F2 or the horn button, you get a same duration of horn every time.
  • Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Down [tdn]The bell is nice and crisp but it doesn't decay as well as the QSI decoder.  You also can't play the bell and horn simultaneously with the older v.2.0 decoder.
  • Thumbs Up [tup] The chuff sounds a bit truncated below speed step 010 because there's very little decay to the sound.  Above speed step 010, it starts to blend together so that it's not noticable.  I actually like and prefer the "throatier" chuff sound of the Loksound decoder over the QSI decoder.
  • Thumbs Down [tdn] Came with t a non-working coupler on the pilot

Wow!  $15 for a car....for Trix rolling stock?  If so, that's a terrific deal!  The NYC caboose alone goes for close to $40.

Jerry, let us know if you end up getting the Trix BB and how you like it.

Jerry,

I beleive the original MSRP was closer to $700.  Since Trix dropped the price on them and the 2-8-2 Mikes, I've seem them advertised for $450-$500. IMHO, $450 (including tax and S&H) is a good price.  I'd still shop around at online discount places, just to see if you can't beat that.

Let us know what "you" decide...

I have been offered an oppurtunity to purchase a Trix Big Boy w/sound and dcc set up for $400 plus shipping and tax which brings it up to $450. Is this a good price. I was told they normally cost $900+/_
