interesting railroad bumper sticker
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 6:06 AM

I was on my way to work today in Harrisburg, PA and I got behind a pickup truck with a bumper sticker that said the following:

"America's National Railroads - They Use You - And Then Abuse You"

It had some logos under the words, but couldn't tell what they were.  Didn't know if this guy was a former railroad employee that was unhappy with circumstances or what.  Anyone else ever see this sticker?

wow, thats a weird one!

yeah, probably some disgruntled ex-employee..or a lunatic fringe environmental group targeting diesel locomotive exaust, because they ran out of other things to complain about..either way, I doubt its a strong movement! ;) probably about 5 of those bumper stickers were printed.

it SHOULD read "America's National Railroads - We use them- Then abuse them"

Venck,

You it's possible that this may be from an ex-railroad employee.

While we are railfans we have to look at both sides of the issues.  The large Class 1 railroads, while they do struggle against lawsuits, stringent regulations, and inftrastructure problems have had a lot of problems with employee morale and the work atmosphere.

I have a lot of stories, particularly of CSX, in which it seemed that loyal workers were treated harshly or unfairly in a number of circumstances.  Too many to list, however consider posting this over on the TRAINS forum.  There are a number of railroad professionals there that can provide some good details as to the ups and downs of modern day railroading.

Somebody does not sound like a happy camper.

 My bumper sticker just says:

I travel by rail.

And I vote.

I see them all the time at my Job. I am a Locomotive Operator at one of the Powder River Basin Coal mines. The logos under neath them are for the various railroad unions. Personally it comes off as a bunch of cry-babies supporting each other. I have never seen such a bigger group of whiners in my life. Ask them to move a train for us and its like you upset their hole day. And heaven forbid if they show up and the train is still loading. I know the scedule sucks but Dang is it really that bad?!?!

Kinda sounds like that news story about the Guilford train left idling in a residential area; stupid citizens complaining.

James, so where you're working at, is it a mixture of union and non-union crafts?

Whiners? Hold up junior, that job you had used to be held by US not you. Now before we start a flame war lets talk reality. You move trains inside the limits of said coal loading thats your domain not ours anymore we have limits as do you.So before you call it whining maybe you should just say " Hey guys what are your limits?"Can you pull that train up to the limits? Kindness works great.

So the brotherhoods made these stickers. Now you guys want to slam them for having them?Get real this job isnt all fun and games. I just got declined on a crew consist violation. Glaring and obvious breach of contract and they decline it. But am I whining? Nope next time I wont do the move.Simple as that.We ( actually our union leaders) gave a LOT up to the railroads. so they feel they can walk all over us. No contract for how many years? No real changes or study into fatigue issues?Oh your too tired to take the train? Then please be at our office so we can investigate you and fire you over an ambiguos availability plan.

Now I switched from UTU to BLET cause I am an old Teamster and I wanted to keep my teamster seniority up.Plus I want to be an engineer simple as that. Do I agree with everything my union says? No not really some is bunk some is truth.Do I believe the railroad? NOPE!!ETMS works and the FRA says it does ( FRA said dont ever say we said something we didnt)We will add to boards ( Cut the boards and force people into a work retention board )We support and work with our work force on safety issues.( right sure you do)

So in closing ask before you call someone a whiner, I have no problem with the mines wanting to have you guys do it. Cost effective and all.But did you ever think that it took away jobs from these guys?Plus like I said about limits, if we dont get paid for it why work for free for one and two maybe we are not allowed to operate on your part of the property.

Nuff said off my soapbox and no offence was meant to any of you all here. Stay safe.

Yes we are on time but this is yesterdays train
