So who is planning to get the new Walthers Santa Fe Super Chief[?][?]? I am planning to buy the 8-car set but not the new Athearn engines. The cars will go with the older F7 set (numbers 46-46C)[;)][:)][:D][8D][swg].

I was thinking about getting some of the cars (already have the new Genesis F7 A/B), but what is the real difference between the cars that Walthers already makes for the Santa Fe and these new ones (beside the $)? I just bought the Walthers Bud RPO and Bud baggage cars. I thought these were used for the Super Chief. Am I wrong, confused or both? [%-)]

Btw, Merry Christmas everyone! [:D]

The Budd RPO and Baggage cars are Santa Fe prototypes. The RPO is in series 89-98 ordered in 1952 and delivered in 1954. The Baggage car is in series 3500-3554 ordered in 1952 and delivered in 1953. The cars were used primarily in general service and could upon occasion run in the Super Chief. The train that Walthers is producing is a comprimise. The 4-4-2 Sleeper is a pre war car, while the Pine series 10-6 sleeper was purchased for the first post war reequiping of the Super Chief which occured in 1947, however, the cars weren't delivered until 1950, in time for the last reequiping. The lounge, dome and diner are correct for the last reequiping of the train. The obs are PSCM and were purchased for the first requiping. ACF produced one 4-1 Sleeper Obs Vista Club in 1950. To make an accurate rendition of the 1950 Super Chief, you would need a ACF 10-6 Palm series and Budd 10-6 series sleeper, ACF and PSCM post war 4-4-2 Regal Series sleeper, ACF 82-88 series RPO and ACF 3409-3426 series Baggage and one ACF/PSCM Vista series sleeper loung obs.

I have noticed on Walthers' advertisements (tri-fold wallet size) the dome car is lettered for the "California Zephyr". One would think Walthers would picture pre-production cars with the correct lettering [V]

Take care,

I want the set and I'm hoping Walthers doesn't sell out before I get my order in. I was wondering though if I maybe I could also just purchase the engines w/o the cars? [?] I'm trying to spread the hobby dollars evenly in 2004.

SuperChiefFan,

You can order the cars without the engine. If you order it from Walthers before December 30 you can get four free lighting kits and a free Union Station or REA Transfer Building. However you must have the Walthers Teminal Hobby Shop
brochure. It has a product number for the sets that indicate the free items. Also Walthers has a special flexible payment plan. For info call 1-800-487-2467 and ask for the Super Chief sales Reps.
