Getting Smoke Oil into an HO Engine
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 2:31 PM
Last Christmas our family purchased an HO train set to run around the Christmas tree. The engine came with a little blisterpack of smoke oil that we could insert into the smoke stack with the help of a provided pin.

This year we purchased a bottle of Model Power smoke oil to put in the engine but we haven't figured out how to get the oil into the tiny hole in the smoke stack without getting oil all over the engine. Does anyone have any solutions?

Greetings,

I bought an eyedropper too at Eckerds.

Any drug store should sell them.

Syringes, without the needle also work well. I once had a source for greasing syringes, Which bythe way were made for the Model RC Aircraft industry. These would be perfect as you can control exact amounts.[:D]

I've seen some hobby supply places advertising syringes with a steel tube attached - not hypodermics, the one I saw were intended for applying small amounts of oil to moving parts. I'm currently searching for one for my G-Scale loco smoke unit.

Ncmoogks,
Haven't tried this for smoke fluid myself, and don't know the diameter of the hole in the stack, but you might want to scrounge a perfume funnel from the distaff side of your home. The one my wife had is pink plastic, so it's hard to misplace it on the workbench ! Haven't bought one, but you might try stores that sell perfume or notions, or ask your wife to shop for it.

I forgot one other cheap and dirty source for syringes. Try you local pharmacy and ask for the child's liquid perscription syringes (no needle) which will take upto 20 ml.
