Enough already

Am I the only one getting annoyed with the constant advertising of Kalmbach Publishing? It's bad enough that everytime I come to these forums I have to deal with pop up's for there books but today when I got my model railroader, there was an annoying cover that was for Kalmbach books on my magazine. Upon trying to remove it, it bent one of the staples to the magazine so I'm sure in the future the pages will start to rip out of it.

In the near future I will most likely not buy any new books from Kalmbach because of there constant in your face advertisment. Back off with the ad's!!!! If I want those kind of books,I know where to find them.

how else are companies going to sell their products. you don't see big time business like mcdonalds and best buy not advertising. if companies didn't advertise they wouldn't make any money therefore the great magazines we have like MR and Trains wouldn't even exist probably.

I have no problem with them advertising. I often enjoy reading the ads that they have in model railroader when they have new books out. What erks me is the CONSTANT advertising. It's like AOL with the cd's and pops ad's you keep getting from them that drive you nuts.

I have no problem with a little advertising, but as a consumer, the more the company flashes there stuff in my face, the more annoyed I get so the less chance there will be of me buying it.

Like everybody,I could live without all the ads and pop-ups but considering that this forum doesn't cost me a single penny,I can live with them also.I see two pop-ups at every log-in and two clicks take care of them so it's not so bad,is it?

The advertising in the magazine,on the other hand,is exagerated considering the mag is sold and not cheap by any means. But since removing some ads would result in a smaller mag and probably reduced quality instead of more articles,I'll live with that too.

You have a point regarding the extra cover attached to the mag.Since it's delivered in a wrapping, the ad sheet could have been slid in "newspaper style" and still would have reached us but....well maybe in the future.

There is plenty of pop-up stopper software--or you could just use a browser like Mozilla which includes automatic pop-up blocking.

I don't mind Kalmbach advertising--I buy the stuff all the time (albeit used when possible) and find it very good, and I don't have to see the popups.

Kalmbach is a business and businesses exist to make money for the owners, stock holders, etc. If Kalmbach can increase their profits by more advertising then that's what they will do.

This reminded me of the new Porsche SUV. Porsche purists are very upset that Porsche would sell an SUV. Porsche is in business to make money; if an SUV will make them money, then they’re going to sell an SUV weather or not the purists like it or not.

Poppin Up Again
by ironhorseman
a song about pop up ads

Poppin up again
I ain't got time to sit around
And read 'em all my friend
So I'll be gone
And you can let
Some other fool
Be roped in

I'd like for you to listen to
An ad I saw today
About a vacuum cleaner
That said it could do
It's own housework all day

I'd tried to click out of it
But it just wouldn't go away
Did you ever see a screen so filled
Of ads with purple pills?

Poppin up again
I think I'll try another page
They're they go again
So I'll be gone
And you can let
Some other fool
Be roped in

These ads to me
Are misery
And here I'm wasting time
Cause a pyramid scheme
And vanishing cream
Is not what's on my mind

But then you see
Them teasing me
And that's not what I prefer
But I'm right here
Steering clear
Of ads and computer nerds

Poppin up again
I think I'll try another page
They're they go again
So I'll be gone
And you can let
Some other fool
Be roped in

Pop ups are rude and annoying. They aren't good advertising and just irritate a number of people. Some one said Kalmbach needs to advertise but unless your screen is different than mine, there is advertising on it all the time. It is one thing to advertise and let people know what is available; it is another to be intrusive in people's lives.

I hope those involved in pop ups are plagued by telemarketers.

Sometimes the the adds are more interesting than the articles.

I sometimes go through my old magazines (40 + years for some of them) looking at the adds. Particuarly adds showing models.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Pop up's are annoying, and I agree with RSN48 in wondering why it would be considered good PR to annoy people with your advertising.

Other the other hand, as this is a free forum brought to us by Kalmbach Publishing. It's their right to run how ever many ADs they want.

I get more annoyed at the many "subscription inserts" I have to pull out of my (paid for) MR magazine so I can turn the pages unhindered by clutter. I wonder how many trees are wasted on this. At least pop up ads only waste time.

If you don't come to the forum frequently, the pop ups are no big deal. If you come here frequently, they are a big deal. Again, Kalmbach does advertise without the pop ups; there are many ads on their site.

Again my Kalmbach curse: May a plague of telemarketers call your homes, whoever is responsible for pop ups.

there's a simple way to deal with popups - get some anti-popup software. I use Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper, it's a free download, and works very well.

And on the subject of the AOL CDs, there's been a fair bit of dicussion in various newspapers over here as to the best way of using them. Most people use them as birdscarers in the garden, or as beermats!

I use Adaware, Norton Internet Security and 2 other unnamed programs to specifically block ads, pop ups etc. (Might even improve your security as well) There is no advertising activity on my service other than a small ad via my ISP from time to time.

Also try "shoot the messenger" because they use your Instant messaging service to deliver advertisements.

I do not have any problems with ads in magazines, historically over 30 years it is a favorite way to learn of new things in the hobby.

I find it hard to believe that someone offers you a FREE forum to ask questions, share your ideas, and
learn a thing or two, and then you complain about pop-ups. If this site depended on your contributions
or dues to operate then you might have a leg to stand on. They offer this forum as a service to you.
Someone has to pay for it. And they pay for it though advertising.Dave

The "ad wrap" helps to protect the magazine, which reduces your annoyance by reducing the incidence of the Postmaster's Finest Mechanical Marvels mangling your mag, which also means that the publisher doesn't have as many replacement copies to send out...

The pop ups are Kalmbach stuff, not some other companies stuff that is keeping the site free. No intrusive pop ups at the Atlas site. The problem is some door knob has given a presentation to upper management at Kalmbach showing them how pop ups improve whatever you're flogging, hence the reluctance to get rid of it. I would say to Terry to ask Andy S how many things he has bought because of all the pop up advertising that used to haunt the layout design sig forum. The answer will be "zero."

Be a little more forgiving-----there are a lot more important things in this world to worry about than the pop-up ads.

Kalmbach has a very effective ad strategy; not only on the pop ups but also in the magazines. They tie all their pubs together. For instance if you buy MR, there's a notice to see a similar article in this month's Trains mag and visa versa. Undoubtedly, the editors all meet to discuss ad as well as editorial content and thusly form their strategic attack. Also, Kalmbach pubs are frequently cited within the articles and that boosts book sales.

It is sometimes a bit annoying but nonetheless it is what they have to do to continue giving us quality products. BTW, off topic, what really is annoying is when my favorite radio station, NPR, goes on week-long ad campaigns for donations.

Decaf is available at a store near you. Popup blocking software is but a few mouse clicks away. Both together are a winning combination.
