Very common in past with NS locomotives (as pool units I suppose). The SP units seen in Alabama are usually very dirty making for great weathering projects if you go ahead with your modeling plans. Have seen them in Birmingham and Opelika located in east central Alabama about 30 miles NW of Columbus GA. Hope this info helps in your decision making.
