You make good posts, Adam. Don't worry about it. I''m a teacher, so let me be the first to say....get back to your lessons, young man!

mike

Actually I finished all my work before I would go to the school library and post, I am a good student and my teachers had no problem with letting me go to the library to read and post on the forums. The only time I posted while I was doing work was when I was doing my casey jones project and I had a question I couldn't find the answer to and sure enough within 5 minutes I had my answer And I finished my project.

I know...it wasn't exactly what I'd hoped to find, either. It's all the Webster site had. [:)]

Flaming, as far as the internet is concerned, is could be considered giving someone hell, I guess. Possibly akin to libel, or slander?

Maybe someone has a better definition?

I'm glad to hear you're a good student. I'm a resource English and Science teacher, so the kids I teach have some trouble making good grades.

Maybe Flamming is like marching to a different drummer?

Rotor

I believe the drum rudiment they are talking about is a flam. It really has nothing to do with flames but i guess it uses the same verb. Something of that sort.

Here is what answer.com has under flaming/technology:

Flaming is the performance "art" of posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting, usually in the social context of a discussion board (usually on the Internet). Such messages are called flames, and are often posted in response to flamebait. Flaming is one of a class of economic problems known as The Tragedy of the Commons, when a group holds a resource (in this case, communal attention), but each of the individual members has an incentive to overuse it.

Although the trading of insults is as old as time itself, flaming on the Internet started in the Usenet hierarchies. A flame may have elements of a normal message, but is distinguished by its intent. A flame is typically not intended to be constructive, to further clarify a discussion, or to persuade other people. The motive for flaming is often not dialectic, but rather social or psychological. Sometimes, flamers are attempting to assert their authority, or establish a position of superiority. Occasionally, flamers wi***o upset and offend other members of the forum, in which case they are trolls. Most often however, flames are angry or insulting messages transmitted by people who have strong feelings about a subject. Occasionally a flame can also be used as a zenslap. Finally, some consider flaming to be a great way to let off steam, though the receiving party may be less than pleased.

Similarly, a normal, non-flame message may have elements of a flame – it may be hostile, for example – but it is not a flame if it is seriously intended to advance the discussion.

I have actually been thinking of being a teacher when I grow up...yup thats right I spend 11 years in school and I am thinking about spending an extra 4 after my 12th year and then spending another 15-20 years teaching and most likely learning more.

Me either. I haven't seen it. I got tired of the senseless posts on here about a week ago that just wouldn't end. It got me flustered, so I left. That was a mistake, and I'm back to stay this time. I never contributed to any of that, and won't. We don't need it. In fact, this is the first and last I'll post on this thread, because I wanted yall to know for sure it was me, and I want to give my two cents.

Where are you seeing this at? I can't remember ever seeing some one make posts like that? I agree that some times people make negative posts when really they should have just not replied.(If you can't say any thing nice...You know...) I try not to get my panties in a bunch if somebody flames me. There's too many nice people with great advise here to let a few bad apples spoil it for me.[2c][^]

Rotor,

Looks like Google is using it for their definitions nowadays, I know in the past they used Websters, I was told by an SEO (search engine optimization) firm, they taught the spiders the websters dictionary to train them for search relevence.

This is all the garbage I am trying to forget, since I spent almost 7 years in the web industry, with SEO being the big thing towards the end, remember Google is your friend for just about anything you want to know [;)]

I treat this like I do TV; if I am offended, I leave. If I choose to reply (or watch), I have no one to blame but myself. After all, when we initiate or reply to a thread, we are inviting someone to read what is posted (right?), and to reply in kind. If we post something that any one reader concludes is contrary, closed minded, full of ****, incomplete, or perfectly sensible, and that person chooses to engage us by replying, then we have a conversation. It may be obtuse, volatile, inflammatory, arcane, funny, outrageous, technical, boring, or utterly neutral (some would also call that boring). We all choose to be here, whether silent or not.

All that rant aside, I also find some threads repetetive, and have just stopped myself from sending in a biting remark. In fact, I chastised a member earlier this year for doing that, so I had better be extra careful...[:I] Don't want me backside out in the breeze. Them cinders hurt!!

Let the trolls, witches, orcs, and wights have their due, friends. All are God's creatures. If you can't abide them, hurry by....don't make eye contact.

SEO, ISP, www,...I'm so confused! [;)]

I'm literally computer stupid!

For over 40 years I never had a computer, and now I have to learn everything! [:D]

It's bad when I have to ask The Kid how to do something! [:I]

I kinda envy the computer literate folks out here. Maybe my web sites could sctually make money, if I only knew what I was doing!

Rotor, keep bugging the kid, I find my mom, girlfriend, her family and anyone that knows I did computer stuff calling me all the time, I started to tell them it will $$ for my help. I spent more of my free time working then when I was at the office.

Now model railroading, not to many in the family, or around me to get that way, infact I am pushing a couple of guys I knew through the old business into the hobby [:)]

I'm on several other forums, and believe me, next to some of the contributors on the other forums, we on THIS forum are a group of incredibly well-behaved, highly civilized hobbyists who all deserve medals for both good sense, good manners and respect for each other's individuality.

I am currently on a forum where the moderator is seriously thinking of closing the forum down completely. He's had to delete so many topics because of one or two Trolls who are poisoning the threads so completely that we're becoming afraid to post. Now THAT'S destructive behavior simply for its own sake, not even the sake of an honest argument. And if he blocks them, they simply return under another name.

Believe me, fellas, even the occasional explosion we have on this forum is NOTHING like what it gets like on some of the others. For myself, I thank you all, everyone here makes this forum a pleasure to visit.

Whoa, whoa, JoeyM7899, unless half the adults here go to school, that won't take care of the problem! And Alec, what you said is fine in my book, it's posts like JoeyM7899's that made me create this thread.

Rotorranch... agree with that!
I'm planning to get from my first childhood to my second with as little interuption as possible.
Thought this thread was rubbish but you've got a point.
I play with the biggest trainset in the country 1:1 ratio.
If anyone upsets me I just throw my rattle out of the pram.
Come on someone...object that, that's being childish!
