Which road scheme is your favorite for this iconic Alco diesel ?
Bayway Terminal NJ
Tough decision. I think the Santa Fe's was probably the most photogenic. Just picked up a Proto Santa Fe PA and PB at an estate sale cheap. I have a UP PA in Proto as well. I do love the Rio Grande's schemes on these as well. Have an Athearn in the black and yellow as well as some silver ones still to letter in the short lived silver scheme. The Yellow and Silver is too new for my Era but is beautiful on the PA's too. The one stripe did not look as good though in my opinion for what it is worth.
Tough decision, too!
I have to admit some bias since GE kept me employed for almost 40 years, but it was a different company then.

After their More Power To America tour these PA-2s wound up on the P&LE as 4212 and 4304.
Still, the Nickel Plate Bluebird scheme rates up there with me.

— and, well, I like the early Erie shades of green also:

Somewhere in the mix would be the New York Central two-tone gray arrangement. Subdued but classy:

ERIE LACKAWANNA for me. Gray and maroon look great together.

Living the dream.
I was never much a fan of the PAs, but did like the FAs and FPAs a lot more, pretty well in any paint scheme.

"One difference between pessimists and optimists is that while pessimists are more often right, optimists have far more fun."
Ed, that first photo confirms my thinking. The PA looks oversized, bulky, and dimensionally incorrect for a locomotive of that overall size.

Take another look at that top photo, Rich. That ain't no Alco.
Heres the same model painted for seaboard.

Just be glad Alco went back to the drawing board after the homely looking DL series!

Sorry, Ed. I am all screwed up. I normally use my laptop, but this morning I tried to use my smart phone. lt may be smart, but I sure am not.
The photo that I meant to refer to was that first NYC photo that you posted late night. My bad.
For me, if it has flanged wheels on steel rails, it's beautiful!
For me it would be the pinstripe on the dark green locomotive enamel.
Pete.
My Atheran Blue Box Pennsylvania PA-1 set I bought new in 1984. Rick solid reliable performance.
Great selections guys, thanks for your imput. I have given up on waiting for Rapidos PA's to arrive in the US, so now i'm planning an expansion of my modern day layout that will include a histrorical /excursion section consiting of a few new brass steam & diesel engines togehter with some coaches. Division Point's SP PA2 in Daylight colors is on the agenda as possible pre-order. The engine proto type photo is shown below, any SP fans out there? Bayway Terminal NJ

I do not recall ever seeing a PA with a plow on it before.
They even extended the lower pinstripe onto the plow... neat.
I must go with Santa Fe red warbonnet, first.
However, for me the Rio Grande gold and silver schemes are a close second. Always loved them too.

Same here. Santa Fe first. My next is Southern Pacific...

The S-P PAs on the City of San Francisco had plows. Just maybe not tall enough ?
Respectfully, Ed
The D&H blue re-working of the Santa Fe scheme is the one I like best. Much more elegant and less brash that the Santa Fe red...

Wowee! As an old 'east bay boy' I love that shot in so many ways. A thousand feet east of San Francisco bay is 6020 at Berkeley, Ca., heading southbound towards Emeryville and Oakland, Ca.
Big sign in the background was on Fourth St. Berkeley Pumps, famous for their marine jet-drive units, a good friend worked his machinist apprenticeship there. I worked a few blocks away at Johnson Gear and my father grew up on Fifth St.
Thanks for the memories and Regards, Peter
I knew there would be a SP fan out there, glad you liked the photo in more ways than one. Bayway Terminal NJ
