I just got a IHC Pacific loco. To me it looks a little small. Can someone tell me if it is a true scale model.

I'm not certain, but I believe this (and most IHC models) is based on a USRA locomotive design. Not all railroads used the USRA designs for each class of locomotive, so while this is probably fairly true to scale, it may not represent the prototype of the railroad you are modelling. For example, IHC makes numerous locomotives in UP, but few of them represent actual prototypes that were run by UP, since UP rarely used USRA designs, but instead chose to have custom designed locomotives built for them. There is a fair amount of information about this topic available online, although finding it can be tricky at times.

I am working on a IHC Pacific to convert into a NYC K3q.The IHC is a pretty good model of a USRA,4-6-2 and scales out pretty good to the dimensions in MRRs Locomotive Encylopedia.Most of the detail is molded on but can be easily removed to put on stand away details

Why wouldn't it be?
Some Pacific's were larger than others.

Take a CPR Pacific & place it beside a NYC Pacific & there would be a noticeable size difference.

Which railroads' Pacific was larger, CPR or NYC ? Is the IHC HO model a light Pacific or a heavy Pacific? This is a place to learn, no?

The IHC is a USRA light 4-6-2.

As far as the other question goes, it depends. CPR had some rather diminutive 4-6-2's and had some (in classes G-3 and G-4) that outweighed NYC's largest.

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.
