I'm not certain, but I believe this (and most IHC models) is based on a USRA locomotive design. Not all railroads used the USRA designs for each class of locomotive, so while this is probably fairly true to scale, it may not represent the prototype of the railroad you are modelling. For example, IHC makes numerous locomotives in UP, but few of them represent actual prototypes that were run by UP, since UP rarely used USRA designs, but instead chose to have custom designed locomotives built for them. There is a fair amount of information about this topic available online, although finding it can be tricky at times. <br />-Joe
